Unhappy 1997 Weird Tranny

My 97 1500 4x4 with 350 and auto started acting weird tonight. It reverses fine, first and second gear are fine, but the tranny "skips" third unitl about 2800 rpm where it catches. I haven't gone fast enough to get to fourth, but I guess its the same. So I was wondering if it might be the torque converter or valve body or solenoid or what? Its been a good truck and I was hoping to sell. If I can't fix, I might just flush the fluid or knock a grand of the price of the truck. Please help!!!!!!

Re: 1997 Weird Tranny

Is the check engine light on? You should probably check to see if there are any codes stored in the PCM.

Shifting from 2 to 3 is based on speed, throttle position and engine load. Assuming that the criteria has been met, a stuck (or sticking) solenoid or shift valve could be your problem.

The solenoids can be looked at with the pan off, but the valve body should come out if the shift valves need to be inspected.

Good luck.
