Check engine light on/off

I have a situation with my 1994 vw jetta gl 2.0 manual. The check engine light is on. When I start the car it is not on after ten second it comes on. It ides rough but not chugging but more like a slit miss. When I rev the engine above 2200 rpm the light goes out. Now that is in every gear. I have had all these things replaced.
1. fuel pump, filter
2. tune up (spark plugs, cap, rotor)
3. new timing pelt water pump, balancer
4. two oil sensors. one above filter the other on the left side of case.
5. coil with new ground (oem one makes ground wire to short)
6. clutch (with ajustment)
7. mass air flow sensor (on top of air box)
8. new rear mid muffler.
9. Check all vacuum leaks (none) replaced worn out looking hoses.
This covers all of the engine stuff. Now the light was not on before the timing belt broke (did not bend valves) but has come on afterwords. Autozone cannot read codes with a obd2 system reader. The tech that I talked to said some thing about a sensor in the distributer kind of like a old point. But he said I would have starting problems. The car does take like three seconds to start. What should I do and what and how do I read codes with out a obd2 checker. This thing is starting to make me made I think I mite go back to driving my big motor 71 vw bus. thanks for anyones help in this situation.

Go ahead and read the code yourself to give yourself a starting part in your diagnosis. I posted an earlier post about how to read the codes manually, and I have modified its content to include earlier 94 models if yours happens to fall in this category. Just follow the procedure which describes your diagnostic connector.

I experienced a situation like this...it turns out it was the Hall Sensor in the Distributor....from the outside of the dist...you can see the small wires (three, I believe) feeding the sensor.....A/C Delco makes an aftermarket part you can install yourself....I unfortunatley replaced the complete dist.
