If your 96 is like my 97, the replacement pump can be gotten at most auto part stores. I got one for $105 at Pep Boys. Don't even think about getting one at the dealer. They won't sell you one, just the entire pump, pump housing, fuel quantity sender unit, pressure regulator and filter assy for about $650. The pump kit I got also had a new seal for the cap that screws on to retain the pump housing assy and new fuel pump strainers which I HIGHLY suggest you replace if you are in there. Save yourself a lot of trouble later when they clog up, which they are known to do. If your pump is integral to the tank, you will have to drop the tank to remove it. If it and the filter mount outside the tank, like on the frame rail just forward of it, then I can't tell you much, as I have only done the other kind. There was a dealer recall on the 97 about the fuel quantity sender unit being replaced due to inaccurate readings. The new module just clips on to the housing, so it's a snap to do if you have the assy out.

I can't tell you anything about the spring, as I have never messed with one yet.

No. The cost for the part alone at the dealer is about $650. You would have to pay a bunch more for the labor if the dealer does it. I tried to get them to sell me just the pump ( when I actually needed just the strainers). They wouldn't sell anything but the whole assy. Bite the bullet and do it yourself - that is if you can do it yourself and have the tools, knowledge, etc. I have had the tank on my 97 out twice now. Once for the fuel sender unit replacement, and once for the clogged fuel strainers replacement. I couldn't find anyone who was stocking just the strainers, so I went ahead and changed out the pump anyway since I was in there and I had about 140K miles on it anyway.

My 97 went out on the interstate, limped to the nearest garage, waited 2 hours and dropped $580. Back on the road

i did some research for it at pep boys and auto zone average price was about 100 dollars what i am mostly concerned about is labor how much would that cost me I dont have much time to do it myself as i normally would so usually i do my own stuff but since i hardly have ever been to a shop and paid for labor i was just wondering an estimate on how much it would cost to install this part

thanx

I did the job in my driveway. Took about three and a half hours start to finish. Jack up the back end, drop the heat shields, unhook the filler and vent hoses, disconnect the electrical harness, unhook the hanger straps (deep 14mm? socket) lower the tank to ground to unhook the pressure and return lines, unscrew the retainer cap, remove, disassemble, and reassemble volute assy with new pump and strainers and reinstall tank. Would have been easier if I had more than one person and a hoist to raise the Jeep and work under like the dealer or a shop would have. I guess you should call the stealer and ask for a quote. Good luck.

What did you have done for your $580 and by whom? What was the reason for you repair?

Had the fuel pump replaced. They put it up on the lift and lowered the tank down to the deck. I was in Smokey Point Wash. 40 miles from my house and didnt have a choice. Orig symtom was lack of power at interstate speeds, could only go about 40mph or less. Rode the shoulder till the off ramp.

Let's see - you live in Mt. Vernon or North Seattle? I'm in Mukilteo. I almost bought my Jeep at that dealership at Smokey Point. Dwayne Lane's Jeep in Everett and Town & Country Jeep in Shoreline wanted to sell me just the whole assembly, when all I really needed was the strainers. I got a new pump at Pep Boys near the Everett Mall only because it came with new strainers. Did the pump change cure your problem?

Close,
I lived on Whidbey Island. And I bought the Jeep at Dwayne Lane's in Everett. Yes the pump did fix my problem. Just long enough for something else to go wrong, (read.. rear end, water pump, cat converter, IAC, CPS, front end linkage, shall I continue...?

I guess I should consider myself lucky (knock wood). I have only had the the two fuel issues (sender unit and pump strainers) and I had the front differential carrier bearings replaced. The Jeep stealer wanted $1200 and three days to replace the bearings. Randy's Ring & Pinion near Paine Field did it in a day for $520. I have also had the standard Jeep brake problems with warped calipers, etc. Got a set of drilled and slotted calipers off eBay and no problems since then. I have 151K on my 97 now. Do you still live on Whidbey?
