Why would you want to switch out one of the best auto 4spd tranny?

Re: TRanny q's

after rereading it i even confused myself with my question..........on my th350 i have the short tailshaft housing (6inch) for it to fit in my 84 i need the 9 inch one........i hear that the tailshaft housing on the 700r4 interchanges with the th350...would that solve my problem??..my original idea was to sell the th350 ..if its gonna be very hard i'll just sell the th350 and get the better 700r4

Re: TRanny q's

i believe that you have to get a different crossmember.... here is a post that I found on another forum.

b/m30299 is the 700r4 to th350 conversion kit.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=BMM%2D30299

you will need a th350 with the 9" tailshaft. of would need to get a driveshaft about 3" longer. or can get a driveshaft out of an 82 camaro with the th200 in it.

I've gone through 2 700-R4's in my 86 Z-28. In both trans. 2nd and 4th gear were stripped so I bought a B&M 350 turbo with heavy duty gears and a stage 2 B&M shift kit from Summit ($950). I had to get the changeover kit (summit) and have my driveshaft extended 2 1/2 inches. It working great for me. The only things you have to deal with is:

1) rear end issues, I wind out at 110mph vs. 140+ with the 700-R4. I'm changing from 2:73 to 3:73

2) crossmember and bushings. My shift kit kicks so hard that it shakes all my crossmember bolts and bushings loose. Anything past 3000rpm in first will have me sideways when I hit second!!

You have to understand that with the stock rear your gonna have a quarter car ,but it's sooooo worth it until you get at least 3:73 or better.

Re: TRanny q's

That must be awesome to get sideways in 2nd. Something that i've always wanted to do. I've gotten sideways from a dig....

Re: TRanny q's

well the 700s are nice trannies if its a driver but the 350th is a nice trans for street/strip. i had one in my old s-10. had a 327 pushin about 450hp and the shiftkit in that thing was crazy. i had trouble with the kickdown cable holding the linkage on the carb to about 75% throttle so i wired it completely pulled(bent the hook at the tranny end and got it to catch the lip of the opening and did some modifying to keep it there) and that thing would put your head against the back window every time. Ill have to ask my teacher at school for some easy tricks to get the 350ths to shift better. silly stuff like replacing one of the accumulator springs with a lifter to firm up one of the shifts. dont quote me yet ill have to find out its been awhile
