95' Lumina
Hey everyone,
I have a 95 lumina that is having some issues. It only does it about 1 out of 5 times that you drive it. It starts as a downshifting problem. You get up to speed then when you start to slow down it doesn't downshift. You can feel the engine really lugging down when it does this. Like it may die but it never does. When you get to where you are going and put it into park, the engine revs way up. It then idles so high it is scary to put it into gear. Very hard to diagnos since it does not do this all of the time. Is it possible to put the codes from the check engine light on this model? Or does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!! |

Tricky Tranny
Possible:
Maybe a Tranny problem not shifting properly and getting stuck in whatever gear its in. Was the car setting for a long period of time? Check the tranny fluid. If the tranny has a sticking valve, you could try additive that helps free up valve body. It doesn't always work, but I had sucess a couple times. The additives sometimes take a couple days to a couple weeks driving/shifting. |

Re: 95' Lumina
Cheap scan tools cannot pull codes from your car, so you'll have to take it to a shop with proper equipment. Your issue sounds like a vacuum leak to me, as it has a vacuum shift modulator in the trans (causing the irradic downshifting), and a vacuum leak will also cause it to rev high at idle. Get the car scanned and post the results here if you cannot locate a vacuum leak.
