Replacing Fuel Filter

I am goin to be replacing the fuel filter this weekend but had a couple questions. Chilton's book a couple different part numbers needed J-34730-1, J 37088 etc what have you guys used to clamp onto the fuel line comming from the gas tank so it doesn't spill? And then it looks like you twist opposite directions and it comes loose...

I just kinda moved quickly enough to not spill too much. Gas kinda burns your skin. I got it all up my arm when I changed mine and I feel it at first but after it soaked in it felt very weird with a burning sensation....I dunno. Just relieve the system pressure then pop the old on off and move fast enough to get the new one on and not to spill too much.

Re: Replacing Fuel Filter

just pull out the fuse and let it run out of gas. No spills.Use fuel line wrenches only.

Yeah just pull the fuse, put your key in the starting position for a couple of seconds then take out the keys and get to work.

Re: Replacing Fuel Filter

I usually just release pressure at the fuel rail valve. Then get a container just to collect the extra fuel in the line that is sure to spill. It usually isn't that bad. Also yes on the fuel tank end of the filter there are plastic clips that holds the lines together. You just push in the clips and twist and then pull out. On the other end you just use two open end wrenches. I believe the sizes are 3/4's and 5/8's but its been a couple months since I did one so I could be wrong.

Re: Replacing Fuel Filter

No, the fun part is changing a fuel filter while you have a relaxing smoke .

(I know personally from chatting with some of you and from watching Zoolander that if I don't point out that I was just joking, I would not be able to sleep tonight. There should never be anything around you such as cigerette or live electrical cords (such as extention cord or light or any electrical device that could cause a spark) or any open flame while opening a fuel line.) Ok, now I am going to take a nap .

i think I heard something about this, but then again, everybody has their moments.

On a serious note, funny you brought up the being careful note, ever see a fire ball roll out a few feet in either direction from under a hood? Kid started cracking open a fuel rail still pressurized and had a incandecent drop light.

After I saw that, I threw away all my drop lights and bought florecent ones, not 100% accident proof, but much safer.

Re: Replacing Fuel Filter

Yeah, those things happen and they do actually make a non spark drop light for mechanics who work around fuel systems. Most cost like 100 - 300 though. I usually work on fuel system outside during daylight just to be on the safe side cause there would be a massive depression in my near future if I ever blew up my Formula.
