Angry Blown Transfer Case

150 000 km, my wife's 02 tb trafercase blew, shreded, exploded. She is not a big 4wd driver. Had to replace with a wrecked transfer case, for about $2000.00. Gm said s.o.l. When Mr. Transmission opened it up, they said there was nothing left salvageable. There is still a rear end howl. Did anyone else remotely hear of this??

The transfercase in my 02 failed also...or, as the service adviser said " your transfercase suffered a catastophic failure". They could not fix it and had to replace it...$2000.00. There were two recalls and hundreds of complaints (on the nhtsa.gov web site) about the transfercase on the 02. It affected roughly 80000 vehicles, 900 of which they replaced the TC and the rest they conducted a road test and adjustment and called it good. I believe that these transfercases were designed and/or manufactured with an inherent problem. I can understand having to replace a part or two, infact that is what I was expecting, but to have a "catastrophic failure" tells me that these are problematic units. When I contacted Chevy they accepted no responsibility for the problem and then tried to sell me another one by offering a $1000.00 loyalty voucher that was good for one year. I appreciated their effort but I have not used the voucher. Anyway...that is what happened to me...and no I did not get a "howling" in the rear end after they were done....it was something else.
