2000 Cherokee Sport ??

The Jeep ran fine when we pulled it in the driveway. Left it there for 3 months . Went to start it and all it does is turn over. Can't hear the fuel pump. Gave it a shot of starting fluid. Nothing !! No gas --seems like no spark. What would cause a failure of this type from just from sitting there. Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh I forgot its a 4.0 with only 50k miles on it. Doesn't anyone have somewhere I could look . RElays I can't see or find-extra fuses somewhere ???? Can't see why spark and fuel pump should just die after just sitting. The battery still had a charge and all. Any takers.

Sounds to me like your comouter may not be powering up. See that the MIL light comes on key on, engine off.

You should then get fuel pump operation for 2 seconds when you turn the key on, then nothing until the computer sees the engine turning via the crank sensor (cps).

I had that exact same problem but sorry no help here. Took it into the shop and they looked at it said that it just kept flooding out. AFter about a week they called and said it was already to be picked up when i ask what the problem was they said and i quote "We really don't know. Just started working." but what the did do was change out the plugs (still didn't work after that, it started after the plugs were changed but kept flooding) They also changed the oil, and swapped out the coolent sensor. Sorry couldn't be more help but thats all i got. If u have any more specfic questions just leave a reply.

I'm hoping you mean computer isn't powering up--and what exactly is the MIL light. I downloaded the manual from a link someone had on this site and had picked up a CPS to install since that seems to be a part I'll be changing anyway. My brother owns a small shop where we transform cars and vans into handicapped accessable vehicles but he's pretty busy and I'd have to get a tow there and then listen to him tell me how I'm holding up his little empire. I can get parts from Jeep at shop cost minus 20%. Since my mechanic told me the fuel pump would cost between 375-425$ I called our local Jeep and was quoted something like 342$ ---our price will be 273$. Just shows yu what a ripoff these things can be. The CPS cost me 35$ and was I think like 47$ so I figured might as well just start buying the things that will go. Also needed a hood latch cable. What a set-up. The dealer told me he sells so many of them its insane. If U don't lube the 5-point system they have occasionally U gonna break 1. Also gonna check the relays and fuses I located in the manual I downloaded for fuel pump and anything else I can think of.. Have it Charging now. Any other hints will be most helpful. Its gonna be nice here in the east (L.I.N.Y.) Christmas eve so I want to get as much as I can figure out by then. MERRY HOLIDAYS. Must be politically correct these days. Thanks to all on these boards and hope U all have a safe and happy Christmas (Or whatever). --Chris

Chris,

The MIL light is the "Malfunction Indicator light" on newer cars and trucks. It used to be called the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light. It should be orange. This is the computer indication of emission trouble etc.

It should come on with the key on it the engine computer is working. If you can't hear the fuel pump cycle, see if you can at least hear the relay click on then off. Wait 30 seconds between attempts to allow the pcm (computer) to reset. If no clicks at all, the pump is not likely defective. If it does click, I would whack the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet. If the pump is just sticking from sitting it may startworking fine. Dont hit it hard enough to dent it, you aren't trying to damage anything, just vibrate it some.

If you don't have spark, the fuel pump shouldn't be an issue. You should try the cps first. There is also a relay called ASD that can be sticking. This is what powes up the coil and f/pump feeds. Check your manual for location.

I'm puting in a new CPS this morn and have downloaded the manual from this site for the Jeep. I have no check-engine or service engine lights on at all. Tried the tank knocking-its just plain ole dead. A relay , module, or something to that effect that powers these 2 items up seems logical . Moisture and other factors may have caused it to stick. I'll keep U posted . I'm of today and its suppose to be a fairly warm day here on Long Island NY.Since its gonna be a driveway job. Thanks for the help---Chris

If there's no ses/mil light on key on engine off, Pull out the pcm connectors and check for corrosion. Then check for power and grounds to the pcm. You'll need to get a wiring diagram.

Had the woman in the Jeep after i checked it out -that if I'm correct the amber/orange Mil light came on (looks like an orange engine) and the Service engine light (red) with the key turned to the ignition mode-they came on for approx 3-5 seconds then go away-no starting attempt was made at this point. Went over to where the relays are I think the book called it the Power module box or something to check if there was any clicking of the relays for fuelpump/coil while my wife turned the key to ignition. Nothing its like a dead zone. All the huge master fuses are good. I pulled out the relays just for a visual check and they look clean and even have the elec-grease still on em at the plug ins. The inside of the box was clean as could be. Now why would I not get power to the ASM. Need to get me meter out and check a few things unless I'm missing something here. I've been reading the downloaded manual for this Jeep so my minds a bit frazzled since I only get so much time to read , go to work , be a dad and a husband. Are'nt there any days that last 48hrs and it does'nt rain. Thanks for all the help you guys give.
