Wheel Bearing Hub plus Disk Brakes
Its a 2000 Ford Windstar LX 3.8L
Had front Brakes changed about month ago, new rotors/pads. Front Wheel Bearing went bad, changed wheel hub which includes bearing. Now mechanic says need new rotor and pads again as the bad wheel bearing have runied the rotors. Is is true that having bad wheel bearing could cause this. Already spent $500 on brakes initially, later $400 on wheel hub/brearing, now he wants additional $500. If not changing the rotor will ruin bearing again. Any information is greatly appreicated. Thanks

Does the car wobble at all when using the brakes? If they work properly, then there is no need to change them. You can change rotors yourself in about an hour or so. Its very easy.
wow $500 for brakes. was that for all four wheels? I did my front rotors/pads for less than $200, and that was with Brembo rotors and Akebono ceramic pads.

The van has no wobble or any sort, not sure what brand of rotor the mechanic used in the earlier job.Since wheel bearing are packed do they really affect the rotor because drove 1000 miles during Thankgiving and beside the bad bearing noise no such wobble.

The wheel bearings on nearly every FWD vehicle are completely sealed, and are not re-greaseable.
It is *possible* that the bearing was so loose as to cause wear of the rotor on the caliper mounting bracket, but I doubt it. You would have heard a loud grinding or scraping noise if that were happening. In any event, a new rotor and pads should add only $100 or so to the bearing bill, no more than $120.

No it sounds like hes trying to rip you off. (what a surprise) As long as the bearing is good you shouldnt need new rotors. A good mechanic would have told you this before he charged you for new rotors then tried to sell them to you again.

Bearing damage from your rotors / pads does not make sense to me either.....not at all.
Wonder if they damaged them......or got grease / oil onto the linings while they were working on them.....and now...want to charge you for it........ I did a complete front brake job on my '96 this past spring..... Brembo slotted rotors cost me about $160 at www.tirerack.com Akebono Ceramic pads cost me about $65 from www.rockauto.com. I also bought the "front disk hardware kit" for a few bucks.....you also what to get a packet of "caliper grease" for a couple of bucks. Visit an online parts store for some comparison prices.....They sell Bendix rotors and pads at www.partsamerica.com In store prices are very often cheaper than the online price. I posted pictures that show my front brake job on my '96 at http://community.webshots.com/album/201931518cScpNK Knowing what you can buy the items for at retail....and how much work is involved.....should give you an idea of what they should be charging you.
