Hello to all, I am looking some in-site in an unusual situation.
In 2002 I brought a Protege 5 (new), it has never been in a wreck or anything. I moved to Spain with my car and it has started to develop a shudder. It has a slight simmer in the car when I accelerate around the 80-100kph mark but now once the car is warm (after 35 minutes of driving) it can develop a shudder so violent I have to slow right down. Then it seems to let me speed back up again, but I can tell when I am on the verge of starting the shuddering again. The tires are 7 months old, Yokahams and it has its brakes change by the Mazda dealership here. 3 garages have looked at it and none can figure it out, they have even tried new tires and still nothing. Any help would really be appreciated. Thank you |

Check the motor mounts, front or rear.

Re: Protege 5 starts to shudder when car is warm
sounds like a drive axle problem. inner cv joints usually are the culprits of vibrations on acceleration

Re: Re: Protege 5 starts to shudder when car is warm
Thanks so much for the advice.
I had the Garage check them and they told me that as far as they could tell everything was looking good. I have had other people tell me it might be the inner CV joints, so I will do that next. Merry Christmas, thanks again. |

Re: Re: Protege 5 starts to shudder when car is warm
I did not know there was a thing called an inncer CV joint? Is it separate from what a garage says is a CV joint?
Thanks for the advice, I will get them to look at it. Merry Christmas and thanks again. |

I think you might be looking at the wrong areas...
My 01 protege was doing the same thing your 5 is... but it also didn't idle well at all when the engine got warm...I finally found the culprit after a few hours of troubleshooting....EGR valve...it causes the engine to run roughly because it's dirty and can't open when it should to prevent detonation of fuel. Next time you get that shudder put the car into neutral (or push in the clutch) see if the engine goes back to idle properly or of it's rough...If it idles roughly, you probably have an EGR valve to replace...it cost me about $200CAD to replace. -Good luck |

Re: Protege 5 starts to shudder when car is warm
My '86 323 was doing the same thing. I found the problem while checking my spark plugs. Mine was loosing vaccum cause the valve cover was loose (about a 5mm gap). Wasn't sure of the torque specs, so I just gave all 6 bolts about 2 turns. There's still a small gap, but it's not loosing vacuum anymore, and it runs great. Gonna head out in a few mins and either tighten em the rest of the way down or go get a new valve cover gasket before I tighten em. BTW, my car was NOT leaking oil out teh gap, jsut loosing vacuum.. wierd..
