Parts Crossover
I have a '93 240sx with (im told) a '97 180 sx sr20 s13(the top was painted gold, to match the exterior). I bought the car with a few small problems that I thought would be easily fixed. After examining it closer I am finding several other problems (head gasket, shorted alternator) that I wasn't told about when I was buying it. Long story short, I've spent too much money already thus I need to do all the work myself and I am having alot of trouble finding out what other models have this engine to substitute parts for this one. I would also apreciate any information about how I can verify which s13 I have. At the very least I need to know what other cars use the same alternator. Sorry to clutter up the forum with something that im sure has been said a hundred times but the faq search wasn't working and finding this information on the internet is taking too long. My gratitude to anyone who reads or responds to this.

Re: Parts Crossover
IIRC there is a way to ghetto rig the alternator from the OEM KA24DE on to the SR20... I have no Idea how.
Call Phase2motortrend.com or SRSwap.com to get a replacement. The head gasket can come from a Sentra SE-R (which may or may not raise compression). I also have a spare turbo SR20 headgasket laying around that I didn't use out of my gasket kit. Which, I'd be happy to get rid of. or you can call Phase 2 and get one from them. |

After looking around today, I found that I may be able to have my alternator rebuilt and if not, I'll have to buy it from the sr20store.com. You're sure that no other U.S. sold sr20 motor uses the same alternator as the det s13?
As for your head gasket, I'm definatly interested in it. You can contact me privatly with my email [email protected]. Also I was wondering about what year infinity g20s have the s13. |

Re: Parts Crossover
the g20s came with a fwd version of the sr20de.. don't bother with one of those, you'd have an easier job on your hands getting a regular rwd sr..
as for the alternator, i'm pretty sure the g20 uses a different one.

No good on the rebuild. After checking shop key today, I found that the '96 g20s uses an alternator that runs with 12v and 80 amps, the same as my '97 s13 mitsubishi alternator. Its a different model number, but I don't see how they would mount differently or have a different plug. EIther way I'm going to see if one will mount up tomorrow. Still don't know if the G20 is a s13 or s14. I think I read that the 200sx use an s14, which has an alternator that does not match, so does that mean that the G20 is a s13? And if so, does that leave the '96 g20 as the only U.S. sold car that can make a close match for parts to be substituted in the sr20 det s13?

I was merely saying I don't know what type of motor the '96 g20 is but the voltage and amperage output of its alternator matches my s13. Therefore, I see it as worth the effort of seeing if a remanufacutered alternator I can buy from a local store will work when I find the probability that I won't fit is unlikely.

Re: Parts Crossover
He's confused about the S13.
S13 = 89-93 240SX CHASSIS CODE SR20 = Motor code. any SR20 in the United States made between 91-93 will be the same as an SR20 from an S13. |

I was lead to believe that the sr20 det s13 was the motor without nissan's vvt equivilant and the sr20 det s14 had vvt on the intake camshaft. I made the assumption that the same s13 and s14 descriptions also carried over to the sr20 de motors as well. Sorry to cause confusion by refering to engines as a s13 or a s14, I was merely refering to them by the title that makes them different (aside from the turbo) seeing as how they are all sr20 mortors.

Re: Parts Crossover
ok here's the deal.. the s13 (89-93 chassis) came with the KA24E, KA24DE, CA18DET,CA18DE SR20DET, SR20DE and whatever else, depending on where you are in the world. these are all engine codes (24=2.4L, 18=1.8L) all these engines are RWD engines, which means that the engine cylinders are lined up from the front to the back of the engine bay
ex. ![]() a fwd engine is opposite: ![]() its more complicated than it needs to be to convert a fwd engine to a rwd engine. the g20 engine is the SR20DE but its the FWD version, so its not the same as the RWD SR20DE. the s14 is all silvias, 240sx, etc that were made from 95-98.. so then you get into the s13 and s14 engines overlapping in manufacturing years.. look at orestes' sig to learn about the different years the engines were put in. so now you know that the g20 can't be an s13 or s14 my car (in my sig) is an s13. the cars in the following picture are all s14.

Alright my mistake but back to my original question, are any of the fwd sr20s similar enough to the 97 sr20det s13 to use their parts in? The g20 alternator is close but the housing is different. I must get mine rebuilt. As for the head gasket I'll just stick to sr20 det gaskets but I need to know where I can find a service procedure to do it or know of a u.s. sold one thats close enough to use. R.W.240 says that an sentra SE-R(90-93 I presume) gasket will work. Does that mean that the components and torque specs will be the same too?

I found a good pdf for the engine specs I need http://72.29.75.31/~videof6/manuals/S14_SR20DET_FSM.pdf
Its for a s14 motor but I read that the torque specs and procedures are the same as the s13. Now I guess all I need to know is what us sold car uses the same oil filter. |

Thats pretty much the last of what I need to know. One last question about the maintainence items though. On a 93 sentra se-r, do the drive belts work on my engine? Also I'm having trouble finding what the spark plug gap should be, as the manual I found is vauge about it. Also, what octane fuel works best on the stock engine?
