The commercialization of Christmas

Alright so there has been a lot of talk about the "Commercialization" of Christmas. I wanna know wtf thats about. I mean, yeah at this time of year everything is geared towards sales. Why wouldn't it be? We all want to give gifts to our loved ones and friends; it feels good. I think the commercialization of Christmas is awesome. PLEEEAASSEE give me lots of commercials with great gift ideas... I NEED them. Do we all want to pretend this holiday is a secret? Do we have a problem with companies making a lot of money now? Is it jealousy that fuels this?

I just want to know, please explain to me, what is the problem with christmas? Why are people so mad? Why can't we all just put up a tree, buy our loved ones presents, take a day off work, and spend some quality time together? What's stopping all these people from doing this?

opinions... debates... whatever.. go.

Re: The commercialization of Christmas

The problem is that with all the fancy decorations and piles of gifts, many people don't even remember the true reason for Christmas... To celebrate the birth of Santa.

"Christmas is a time when people of all religions come together to worship Jesus Christ"
- Bart Simpson

Somewhere along the line though that was lost with Santa, gifts, elves, Dillards, the mall, big tall pine trees, snow, gingerbread cookies, deer meat, banging Mrs. Clause, icy roads, un-tearable wrapping paper, oversized nut crackers, magic sniffing snowmen, nuclear powered twinkle lights, government funded egg nog, socks in a can, bar-b-q turkey necks, silk pantied tree ornaments, air compressed snow tanks, and other things that come along with Christmas.

Yup. It's disgusting that something that represents (to me anyway) perhaps the one of the greatest things to happen to the world would be celebrated by so many who don't even know what they're celebrating. They think it's all of the abovementioned things and that's all it should ever be, when in reality it's so much more beautiful than that.

But the thing is that not everyone is Christian, and in reality this holiday was made to satisfy the pagans centuries ago. It's a holiday invented for the purpose of letting others celebrate with the christians; without forcing a christian holiday on them. I think it's a unique day because everybody can celebrate it how they want. If it bothers you that others think of christmas and instantly think of dillards, panty christmas tree decorations, and nuclear powered lights... then celebrate it how YOU want, and let everyone else do as they please.

I don't see why people are basically protesting this. Do my christmas lights affect your ability to enjoy your day?

Xmas is such a huge sales event mainly because all the children and the tradition of waking up in the morning to a huge tree surrounded by free stuff for me. Thats the child's point of view, most of them lose reason and/or don't care what xmas is truly about, as long as they get all the toys they want. So ofcourse companies gotta make money, so it all gets commercialized.

I never meant it as "Well you need to do it this way because I do," and I have Christmas lights up at my house and around my desk in my dorm. I realize that not everyone is a Christian, which is why I said that to me it's bothersome that many celebrate it without knowing what they're celebrating. In the general context of that statement I mean so many people celebrate it because all they think it is is presents, presents presents and I think it's so much more than that, not just as a Christian and as person in general, you feel me?

I think the problem people have is that there are those people out there who get so worked up over this holiday that is supposed to be spent relaxing and enjoying the time, that they have more of a disregard for those around them, such as those sales where people trample on another for a gift. What the hell is that about? It's ridiculous at points. In general the advertising really doesn't bother me, the mystique doesn't bother me and the lights and all that jazz doesn't get to me either. What gets to me is that there are people who absolutely obsess over this time of year and forget to enjoy it.

Re: The commercialization of Christmas

Its about people taking themselves way too seriously and trying to ruin other's holidays.
