car is a 99 accord 2dr ex v6 with 78k miles being sold by a private party. he lives about an hour away from where i live but i talked to him on the phone and hes basically in his mid-twenties and is selling the car because he got a job overseas and it moving after new years.
drives well and mechanic and auto shop said it was good. there are only minor things: couple dings on the truck lid, cd stuck in cd player, cracked plastic cover in front of the odometer, speedometer, tachometer, etc. and it was pretty dirty. all of which can be fixed but cost money. he is asking for 9500. the kelly blue book value is 8900 while the edmunds true market value is 8100. i also looked at another car 2000 accord ex v6 2dr with 100k miles. dark green exterior with tan interior. it was very clean and the owner seemed like he cared for it VERY well and completed all maintenance very well. the only problem with it was there was a tear in the driver's seat leather and also the driver's seat rocked back and forth a little. he was asking 8700. im kind of leaning toward the first one simply because of the color, black on black and lower miles. my question is how i should try and play the price game. i would like to spend no more than 8000 if possible. is that reasonable? what should be my starting offer and what price should i not go above?

print a copy of the edmunds report and the kbb. show him the edmunds report first, tell him that this is what you are willing to pay. if he doesnt want to play ball, then raise a little, if he still doesnt want to, pull out the kbb report.

Def. dont go with the first one. The car had the shit beat out of it. How do you crack the plastic on the guages? Dirt is also the first sign of lack of care to the car. If you do want it, get a carfax, maybe that plastic is broken because he was rolling the odometer back and it cracked when he was putting the dash back together.

Id be willing to bet if you said Ill pay 8000 cash, he'd take it.


I also wouldnt get the second one either because I would not want to pay 8G for a private party car with 100K miles, but if I had to choose, it'd probably be the second one.


P.S. Does the first one have a system/rims/any showings of rice?

My negotiating tactics are one of the two:

1) If dealing with a dealer you say "What is the lowest price you can go, please write it down, initial it and give me a period that the price is good for". Dealers hate this, but I have found great results.

2) With private party, once you have test driven and taken to the mechanic be frank and say "This is the highest I will go. Is it acceptable?" If they don't agree, walk away. If you are being reasonable, you will find a car in your price range eventually.

Basically don't be in a hurry to buy, but be ready to buy before you need to.

O yeah, don't tell the dealer you're trading in. After you agree to a price, say o ok, so if I trade in it will be (know your trade in value) less then that.
