'95 GP struts

Sister in law brings her '95 GP over saying that RR wheel is cockeyed looking. I check this out and find that the strut broke and all I see left is the strut cylinder yet attached to the lower suspension. There didnt appear to be other damage other than a rub mark on the wheelwell wall. Is a broken strut a normal incident like this--or is there something she isnt telling me? The struts are old. At first I didnt want her to drive the car, but being Sunday and having other things going on--I let her drive it home. She told me she has been driving it this way for over a week! I would have tackled this job but the work and time involved is too much for me this week. I assume it will need two struts in back and an alignment?

could have broken bushing the connects the strut to the body, you will need to replace them both and get an alignment. if nothing is done soon, say goodbye to the tire, the about of wear on that tire will increes greatly. 2 months like this, the inside of the tire will be balt. replace ASAP! Pluse traction will be hindred and if she needs to make a fast manuver(sp) she could lose controll. the car will shift on that side, and the car will roll on it and the car will start to slide.

Repair complete Monday by shop. Would not want to say what 2 rear struts and one front ball joint for this '95 cost me---a sin. Wish I had time and tools to do the struts but I didnt, because it is not my GP. The last time this gal tore up a tire (on this car) it was the same wheel. The caliper locked up on the rotor and she drove it that way until the tire blew!
That job in 2003 was expensive. Word to the wise on these GPs: The brakes are a pain to maintain and the shop said it was a bad design on GMs part.
