Question ??? 99 Tahoe starts then dies in 2 seconds ???

99 Tahoe starts then dies in 2 seconds over and over then I have to wait 20 minutes before it starts and runs fine for a couple days or weeks then does it again. I can hear the fuel pump it sounds good. The serves engine light comes on some times and the security light. It has 130 thousand miles on it I have had this problem for six months or so. Any help thanks

I'm going through the same thing, except mine shuts down randomly, just after start up or at any speed which has proven to be quite adventurous. The dealer errr... parts changers have replaced the ignition control module but it just happened again.

Does anyone think this could be fuel related, ie; filter or clogged injectors and if so would it cause a complete electrical shutdown??

Do simple and cheep stuff first, like fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, and if it still does it it might be tps sencer. And you might want to look at your cat, it might be cloged. May also be an o2 sencer.

Check codes Body and engine.
And post back codes.
Does the security stay on when it does it?
Start and run 2-30 seconds and dies and wait 20 minutes for it to start sounds like anti theft system.
Any add on remote start or anti theft systems?

It's only thrown one code; the ignition control module, which has been replaced. I also changed both positive battery cables and it hasn't happened yet. The battery cables improved the charge voltage to the battery, so it could be they were corroded internally.

Yup, that is something I was thinking about that may be happening. I am seeing something very similar on mine now since I was working under the dash replacing the power brake booster around the remote start wiring glob... That remote has never worked on mine since I had it, but it has the look and sound of cuprit when you have this stuff going on.

I had the same thing going on in my 96 GP a while back, and I wiggled all the wires down by the aftermarket security system, and it never did it again!

Those systems are evil, and not worth all the headaches down the road!

My daughter suffered through this trouble for the past 3 months after buying a 1999 Tahoe. Intermittently it would start and die after about a second or two. Letting it set for a couple of hours and it worked fine for another month or so. She took it to a neighborhood garage and the mechanic found the problem. It turned out to be the tumbler housing in the steering column that also controls the security system. There is a 3 pin plug in the housing that goes to a sensor. The sensor tells the security system the tumbler was turned using a key and sends a signal to the computer to turn fuel on. It failed long enough so he could troubleshoot it. The mechanic also called GM and the help desk said it's a common problem. To replace it you need to remove the airbag and steering wheel.
