96 Contour SE

My wifes 96 Contour runs rough at idle or stalls. It does it during cold start, surging up and down, then levels out for a while then even warm, it will surge and stall. Each time she takes her foot off of the pedal, the idle will drop and the engine will stall. I have changed the TP sensor and no codes are logged. In fact, the service engine soon lamp is burned out cause at no time does it light up. Save that for another day!! Scanner says no codes!
I have found broken vac lines, most of which were brittle plastic, some were rubber.(Bloody Fords)...and I work for Ford Michigan Truck! It seemed the more I dug around the more the lines fell apart. Fixed all I could find that were bad.
Seems the problem will go away for a while then come back. I sprayed start fluid around and found it smoothed out out the idle when I sprayed around the upper intake manifold.....

Is it common for these intake gaskets to go bad?? Thanks, TJSCARTS
