no heat.

got quite a dilemma, ive got no heat.

i do believe that my heater core is airlocked.... how do i remedy this? or, is there something else that it could be, considered the thermostat as the issue, but considering that ive got next to no heat any point in time, ive concluded that its that the heater core is not recieving any fluid...

i did have to tear down the upper half of the engine, and therfore, had opened the cooling sytem. i followed all the steps and did exactly as the book told me to in order to get all the air out of the cooling system...

obviously, this wasnt the correct procedure.... so, what is it i need to do now. do i need to open the heater core itself and bleed it, or is there something a little simpler that i can do?

yea, any help is more than appreciated, and i need info ASAP! lol, im in northern illinois right, with no heat and temperatures hitting below 0...

Thanx for your help!

Re: no heat.

did the heater work prior to tearing into the engine? have you checked the hoses going to your heater core some vehicles have control valves to direct coolant to the heater core when the heater is operating and to block coolant when the heater is not operating. a control valve could keep the heater from working. If there is no control valve check to see if your hoses are warm. If one hose is warm you may have a clogged heater core. If both heater hoses are warm you could have have a blend door problem. Did the air purge procedure have you operate the heater while you were running the engine with the cap off, if not you might want to try that.

May be aclogged evaporator.....

Some more thoughts............

I doubt you have an "airlock in your heater core since it s at a lower point in the cooling system. Any air would work itself out in short order. I believe there is a couple bleed valves in the engine compartment cooling system- check where the upper radiator hose joijnd to the engine at the thermostat housing. The Lumina engine sets higher than the radiator, so it has a harder time burping out naturally.

As stated already, let the car warm up and go feel the heater core hoses at the firewall in the engine compartment. If they're both hot, then you have good heat going through the core. Heater core could be plugged/restriceted though. If they're not hot- check your thermostat for being defective or installed wrong.

Air has to pass through the AC evaporator and the Heater core before coming out your vents. The AC evaporator is first in the incoming air-flow (in the dash ventilation ducts) and can become clogged with a mat of dirt and dust over time because of the moisture it produces. This will eventually restrict enough airflow to not adequately heat or cool the inside of your car. Usually you'll notice the vents have a weak airflow even when the fan is on high. Some folks say to replace it, some sy buy the spray faom cleaner for it, I've had luck getting behind it and brushing off the back with a toothbrush (throw awy toothbrush when done!). Cleaning it saves opeining the AC cooling system and works pretty good, but doesn't work quite as good as a replacement obviously.

Good Luck!!!

Re: no heat.

so, give me a quick run down of the process needed to purge the system(as a cross reference to this chiltons manual...) if you could. thanx again!

and i honestly dont remember if it had me run the heater, but now that i think about it, i dont think it did... even though the air should have been purged when i first turned it on anyways... but, its a possiblity that is got trapped in the water pump and that the impellor is spinning but, since its not even hitting fluid, its no circulating.... a stretch, but ive heard of weirder(dont think thats a word, but o well) things happening....
