Just finished the repair that "wiswind" talked about in my emails,, followed the steps,, appears to be to fine!,,
Now fuel delivery faulting,, sometimes the car starts,, when I hear pump in tank running before cranking,, but If i dont it hear it 70% it won't start; fuel filter changed,, 207 relay,, switched out with 102 for a test, no help,, beat on tank with rubber mallot then tried,, no help ,, let sit for 20 min,, it starts,, then if I turn off/on/off/on/off/on several times in a roll the pump sound fades like a strain not near as loud then it fails to start,, then wait 15 mins then it will start,, I assume its the fuel pump now! Taking Van tonight to the dealer for a new pump.. for mondays fix..Am I wrong on the pump??? Last edited by phil a; 12-18-2005 at 03:46 PM. |

Re: 2nd Updated 171/174 codes;did repair!
As things are laid out a bit differently in the new windstars than mine....I am guessing that the relay that you swapped is the fuel pump relay.
The only other thing that I can think of to try is to verify that the power is getting to the fuel pump.....not easy. If they replace the fuel pump....make sure that they also replace the "sock" filter that is part of the pickup assembly. There is a part number for the fuel pump only.....and a part number for the fuel pump and pickup assembly. Tips to help a fuel pump last longer......don't drive around with less than 1/4 tank of gasoline. The gasoline also serves to cool the fuel pump. Some people....especially with the high price of gasoline.....stop and put $5 of gas in at a time...just to keep the low fuel light off......and drive around with very little gasoline in the tank.....which causes the fuel pump to run hot. The other thing that I do....is add some Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner to almost each tank of gasoline......just a few ounces. This (and some other products) have an oil in it that helps to lubricate the fuel pump....and the moving parts inside the fuel injectors. |

I would not even attempt doing myself,, but your suggestions and the link you told us about,, made it very simple,, although mine is 2001 some things were different but I overcame them.. it fired right up after all was buttoned up ran good in the driveway,, I sprayed ether around the plastic intake base and no stumblings as was before.. And yes the hand book diagram shows 207 as "fuel pump relay,, i switched if out with another of the same exact #,, still no start.. This fuel delivery problem happened about 2 weeks ago,, I thought it was part of the Maf/ Oxy sensor confusion upsetting the engine too rich too lean thus not wanting to start,, so I wrote it off as part of those symptons,, thats why it showed up after the other 171/ 174 fix was over...updates on the fix this week...Oh I have extented warranty for another 12,000 miles , that covers "fuel delivery pump.. I'l call the provider monday and see whats covered. Phil... |

Re: 2nd Updated 171/174 codes;did repair!
The credit for the help on the 171/174 (full codes P0171 and P0174 ) goes to the person who did the job...and the added work of taking pictures, part numbers....and instructions....and posting them. They did a GREAT job......
For anyone else with these codes....on a '99 or newer windstar.... http://leckemby.net/windstar/windstar01.html |

And here I just installed a 500 cube Cadillac engine in my 78 AMC Pacer total street rod,, made/ built /eveything,, but the newer cars are more complicated due to electronics and FI and all the plug connections I just cringe working on this Van,, but hobby cars are easy and when you tired shut the door go in the house and forget it for a day or two,, but the Van I need every day....... |
