timing belt broke

i have 00 kia sportage manual. i bought the car from a friend and its not the fuel pump like i thought, its the timing belt. the timing belt is broke. can i just replace the timing belt or do i need to take the head off? thanks in advance.

You can just replace the belt. THis is a non interference engine so it just stops and it does not hurt anything. What mileage did you have? Good you have the manual, but anyway for all who would consider this operation (almost mandatory above 70,000):
