So I was hanging out with my friends tonight, and they wanted to go snowmobiling, but I didn't have my sled so they just went without me, and I ended up staying and talking snowmobiles and cars with my friends dad. As we're sitting there talking, my friend comes back and tells us that a lady spun her car and ran into a snow bank, and the right wheel was buried up to the hood. It just so happened that I had my dads truck, so i figured I would take it to pull her out, becuase it's 4WD with a V8, and my friend has a 2WD V6. So I get down the road, and we can't find anything to hook up to in the rear(it's a Bonneville), and I thought I found something, it was a loop and in a similar spot to where I had seen tow hooks in other cars, so I hooked up the tow strap. I pulled forward slowly til it was tight, and then gave it a little gas, and the whole left side of her exhaust drops...I PUT THE STRAP ON THE FUCKING EXHAUST HANGAR.
By this time my other friend rode back to get my friends dad. So he pulls up, and gets under the car, and by this time I remember there is a flashlight in the glove box, that would've come in handy before. So he gets it hooked up and pulls her out, then goes and explains to her that she needs to get her exhaust fixed. Where am I the whole time? Standing on the side of the road too scared to say that it was my fault that her moms car was fucked up. I just stood there. I stood there and lied to the woman in the car, and lied to friends dad whom I repect very much. Now I feel like absolute shit, I can't believe I did it. I tried to justify it to myself by saying helping her out of the ditch offsets the cost of her exhaust, but I know it's a crock of shit. I don't even know what I should do, tell my friends dad and try to track her down and pay her, keep it between my friends and I, or what? Rant Over.

Re: Definatley Did A Bad Thing Tonight
I did the same thing to my buddy's Sunfire GT, drunk and stuck in the swamp. I hooked the pipe on the left side to the 4x4 and bent it up nice into the bumper faschia when we tried pulling it out.
If it's just the hanger that's busted I wouldn't worry about it. The cost to repair that is less than the tow truck bill she would have recieved had you guys not shown up.

Re: Definatley Did A Bad Thing Tonight
Exhaust hangers arent expensive at all. In fact at the shop i goto they dont even use metal ones anymore because they usually end up breaking. They use these rubber type ones...way better.

Quote:
Seriously, do not worry about it; no real harm done. If lying really does bother you, then find her and tell her. Do not be so hard on yourself. You actually went out of your way to help someone else, with no reward for you. That makes you a better person than most people out there. There is no shame in not volunteering all the truth at the time. it was a new situation and you needed a bit of time to asses the situation for yourself. There is a serious point here. For many decades, the legal system in many countries have struggled about what to do about the 'good samaritan' who attempts to help but makes things worse. Society does not want to discourage people from helping each other, especially if they do it out of the goodness of their heart and without any financial reward. Therefore, there are laws to protect the 'good samaritan'. If they do not receive a reward for their help, they cannot be held liable for any damage they do. However, be careful about those people you help. If there is no risk to a persons life or any injury, consider helping the person call a tow truck, but don't attempt to pull the car out yourself. It's not worth the risk to the car or a person if you help them without knowing what you are doing. |
