Exclamation White smoke+good compression???

you may remember me posting a few weeks ago about hydrolocking my engine and bending a rod and cracking a piston.. well i finally got a couple warm days and put another piston and rod in.. I've never done somthing like this before. After getting everything back together i crank the car up and its running really rough and stalls out every few mins or so, if i hit the gas it bogs out a couple seconds before it goes. Its smoking alot and i got a few symptoms that dont make sense to me..

Tons of white smoke, doesnt smell like syrup.. water dripping out the tail pipe.

White cream all inside my oil cap and valve covers, but no oil in my radiator so far.

My pcv breathers start smoking imediatly at startup, normally it takes about 10 minutes..

179-180psi compression on all 6 cylinders, almost perfect to specs..

smoke rolls out of cylinder 1 and 2 when i pulled the plugs.

why would it have so much white smoke and run so rough? sounds like i have a blown headgasket or cracked block, but having perfect compression really bothers me, i know somtimes it can be a slow leak and not hurt compression but it is smoking pretty bad... it cant be trans fluid since i have a ECT, possibly break fluid but i doubt it, never had a problem with them before the rebuild..

I tried pulling every plug wire while running and there was difference everytime

Sorry to say but head gasket/cracked block, head. You are burning coolant (white smoke) and the cream is water in the oil.

When you hydrolock you have alot of pressure built up in the cylinder and it tries to go everywhere it can. I would say head gasket.

A test to make sure would be a cylinder leak down test.

Sorry for the bad news.

Re: White smoke+good compression???

but why is the compression so good while its smoking that much? and why is no oil in the coolant? i guess it would have to be a head, a cracked block isnt going to go between 2 cylinders, atleast with my block type it would be very odd considering its the most difficult path of resistance when it could just easily blow into the crankcase... if it is the head gasket it blew instantly at first start up... im probably gona pull the cam tomorrow and try putting the head bolts to like 70lbs or so. factory specs is 56lbs..

Re: White smoke+good compression???

well, when you had the head off, you should of taken it to a machine shop so they can vacuum test it to see how well the valves seal. you could of also poured brake cleaner in the ports to see leaks on the combustion chamber side. do a leakdown. the test will pinpoint your possible leaks.

how did your cylinder walls look/feel like when your pistons cracked? honed? plastigauged new bearings to make sure they are in spec? torque is in spec? new rings? new head bolts? new headgasket? walls lubricated prior to putting in piston?

basically, was it done right the first time around? if its your first time, im pretty sure you had the helms right in front of you to do it right the first itme around.

Re: White smoke+good compression???

i pulled a piston out of another legend, it looked pretty decent, didnt replace rings or anything, i figured at worst the used rod, piston and bearings would burn some oil on a already old engine, the rod bearings looked good, no shiney or glazed spots on anything, the cylinder walls were all smooth too. im really not trying to have the whole thing done perfect since i can get a whole working long block for about 450$ anyway, even if the piston i put in was crap that wouldnt burn coolant, just oil, if anything the block cracked.. but before i changed the piston the engine still ran and there was no smoke or anything... so i dont think its the block either... maybe ill just get a new head gasket and spray some permatex gasket sealer it too..

Re: White smoke+good compression???

if i were you, id pickup a used longblock or leakdown and determine where my problems exactly are and work from there.

if you are just going to waste time on halfassing a block, just forget about it and pick up a used known working block. its really not worth the time and effort.

Re: White smoke+good compression???

sounds like you didnt even measure the bearings when you replaced the rod
