Engine swap causing inspection failure

Ok, here is the senerio, my brother has a 1998 cavalier, the previous owner put in a 2002 engine in the car and now the check engine light isn't going off. When he went for the inspection , they told him the 1998 uses a diffrent computer system then the 2002, so the computer is not plugged up to the car, thats y the check engine light is one, now i didn't quite hear what he said, he said something about an EGR valve was needed to correct this problem. any one know how this should have been done or what was needed, i will go see the car and possibly take pictures on the 24th, maybe that'll help

Re: Engine swap causing inspection failure

OK....You need a 2002 cpu, the cpu's are NOT univerisel(sp). Get the cpu first. If at then the light does not go off, well we will go from there, but start with that. why was this not changed when the car had an engine swap? FYI--The cpu may not be reading all the sencers it should be, this is/may be the main problem.

The car's computer is behind the glove box. Open it, and pull it out of the spot in the dashboad, and the computer will be the big metal box behind it against the firewall...

No one even mentioned the EGR, which they dropped off the Twim Cam in 2000 because it didn't need it. Depending upon state law, that might matter. However, my experience has always been that your car must meet the emissions requirements of the original motor that was in it. A non EGR motor should do that just fine as the Twin Cams are LEV's anyways.

All cars have one, thats why it was not brought up. it works with the maf sencer, they reliy on each other to give the proper fuel mix, and where the thruttle body is.

What does the EGR have to do with the fuel mixture?
