Transmission problem

I can change gears on my galant vrg but the problem is..is that nothing happens when it goes into that gear. My N light keeps flashing and the 3rd gear light is stuck on even though i shift up or down. I have a Mitsubishi Galant Vrg 97' I can reverse drive and go forward but it doesn't seem to want to change gears.
Can anybody help me please..I just changed the battery and thats when the problem started.

Re: Transmission problem

Try disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes.
Try checking the gearbox fluid level (and colour whilst you are at it - should be red, not brown).
Also look at www.clubvr4.com - I'm not saying that you will find the solution there, but there are a few Kiwi owners of g's that may be able to help.

I've done all that. Anyway took it into the garage ran some diagnostics on it and wow came up with error code 33 2nd sol open, which means that my 2nd shift solenoid is stuck open..So what i need now is a shift solenoid valve which i have since bought. Now it just needs to be put in and i'm back on the road again.
But hey..thanks for all your help and have a merry xmas..

Re: Transmission problem

How easy is the job? Can the valve be swapped without dismantling the transmission? Do you have an INVECS II box?

Yes it can be swapped without dismantling.
You take the sump cover off the transmission>solenoids are located there>9 times out of 10 it will be the left top solenoid (if your cars having the same problem) Best to check wiring to solenoids first.
Its an 1800 4 stage auto Tiptronic. But hey after saying all that, we started the car..went to reverse and what do you know????The same damn thing happened again DARN IT!!!Back into limp mode it went.
Now what????

Re: Transmission problem

Some interesting info. Thanks. I don't have the same problem as you but I do suspect one of my solenoids is sticking. I have the 5 speed auto/tiptronic.
Good luck fixing it. I hope you still have stuff to try.

Re: Transmission problem

I had the same problem just weeks ago. We just drained all the fluids (left the drip open for 24 hrs) changed the transmission filter then filled it with new fluid. Drove it for a day then drained it again. Put on new fluid again and everythings fine now. Hope this helps.
