ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Allright, i was spinning the tires trying to go up a hill covered in snow.

Halfway up the hill (and after almost 2 minutes) the ABS INOP light comes on, and stays on. I let the car idle for a little bit, thetn shut it off and turned it back on. The light stayed on, then turned off after i started moving.

What does this mean? Is it something that happens when the tires are spinning?

Also, I have a question about the ABS.. i hit my brakes really hard, and it was pushing the pedal back, but what is the sound suppose to be like? The sound i heard.. kinda sounded like trying to put the car in gear without pressing the clutch in... like a grinding sound.. or whatever..

is this normal?

Thanks

I have a 1998 v6 camaro

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

yeah i guess thats close to the sound. when abs engages it releives pressure for a split second then reapplys for a split second and so on till you arent sliding anymore. and it sounds kinda like grinding a gear i guess. its pulsing

If the ABS inop light is still staying on then you gotta take it to the dealership to get it fixed.. if not then you'll be driving without ABS.. Oldschool..

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

i dont have abs lol, and my back brakes arent hooked up, so it was raining the other day and the light turned yellow at the last second where it would be red when i went through so i hit brakes, not really to hard either and i slid for a little then car started to turn the front to the side and i realized i was sliding (all that in like one second) so i let off brakes and reapplied and it was all good. kinda scary, for a split second i thougth i might go into the intersection.

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Thanks guys.

I talked to some people, and they said that this also has happened to them when they peeled out on snow, or just doing a burnout.

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

I have the same problem, except the light is on all the time. I have a 1994 V6 camaro. The "Brake" light and the "ABS Inop" light both stay on all the time. I have a Mac Tools OBD scanner, and I have reset the codes, but they still come back almost immediately. The "Brake" light code reads something like "open brake warning light circuit" (I think), and the ABS code reads something like "ABS circuit open." I already checked all of the wires and where they plug in at the brakes at all four wheels, where else should I look?

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Same thing happened to me. My ABS INOP light is on and that is because when I was changing my rotors I dropped my hub on the ground. I think my sensor in the hub broke for the ABS. I want to get it fixed because it's winter now and I'm sliding everywhere. Do I need to buy a whole new hub?

If you were driving in snow spinning your tires a lot I would just check your fuses and then try resetting your computer by removing your negative battery cable for five minutes or so. Sometimes that is all it takes if you were spinning your ties a lot in the snow. If that doesn't work I would bring your car to auto zone and have them read the diagnostic trouble codes, if you are getting an abs light there should be one, if you are gonna spin the parts wheel and throw a part at a car atleast try to narrow down the area the parts wheel can land on

you might have trouble finding an auto parts store that can read the codes, they ussually have the cheap code readers and they ussually don't read ABS codes, and some OBDII codes don't like disappearing by disconnecting the battery, hopefully you luch out

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Do you have a low traction light on your dash? and if so did it come on?. The ABS inop can come on if your slipping in the rear cause the differential reluctor ring is registering a different speed than your front hub mounted reluctor sensors or it could be from the ABS kicking in. Since you were going up a hill the only legit way it would go on is if you were slipping or the road was slick. I know I can trip my low traction light if I cause the rear to slip and if I am going a substantial speed when I do it (like the 70 MPH I was doing the other night when I broke them loose) it will stay on til I shut her down but if I didn't have the traction lite it may have triggered the ABS inop light.

the low traction light only came on when my ABS was working.

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Well then it sounds like you have a stored brake code in there. I would have it scanned.

Re: ABS INOP.. is this normal?????

Check all of your brake lights, there's several bulbs including the 2 in the spoiler. Sounds silly but that's what fixed mine. It seems the ABS module is suppost to do this as an alert that your lights don't work.
