Timing Question

I wanted to know what the baseline timing is for the 96 monte Z34 3.4L. I replaced my upstream o2 today because it was throwing a code, but i still have P0410 and when i monitor my ecm it shows the timing at -25 at idle and -34 when im on the highway at 60 giving it 1/2 throttle.

Is this way off (I would think so with no advance and pulling timing...lol)and what could be retarding it if i am on the throttle. Before i reset the ecm i had a trans code that said the trans was slipping in OD so i need to look at that as a possible proble also.

Any help you can trow my way would be greatly apprectaied.

BTW since i reset the ECM i have only got the p0410 secondary air code back in 50 miles of mixed driving, no knock codes or anything.

Re: Timing Question

The timing is pcm controlled, nothing you can do to change it.

This I understand but if I knew the baseline I would know if there was something wrong with a sensor or the pcm. I have a hard time beliving that a motor that makes 225 hp would have a timing curve of -25 to -35 and no advance...thats not right.

It might be a knock sensor issue or faulty pcm, timing belt issue...the list goes on, if I knew spec I would be able to start troubleshooting flow.

Re: Timing Question

No check engine lite?, you are right there is no way this thing runs 30 degrees retarded, are you using a full option scanner, if so you can see the knock retard, the timing you see on the scanner is what the pcm is commanding, something is wrong with the way this is reading.

Re: Timing Question

Hey guys, I'm having the same problem with my 96 Z34, was this ever fixed? Also, why are there so many problems with this car. I've had the tranny rebuilt, 3 alternators, and coundless sensors, and my check engine light is still on saying tranny slippage, with only 86,000...
