What gear am I in ~ (trans issue related)

I was pretty certain I lost 3rd and Overdrive last week.. Now I'm not so sure.

I have an appointment to have the codes read etc on Saturday but when I talked to a techician on the phone he seemed to think it was more likely I lost 1st and OD..

96 4.3 .. no ses light, no abs light, clean fluid (changed at 99K, has 127K now)

If I put the truck in 1st it will pull away smoothly, then I move the selector to 2nd and it will shift into the next gear and I can cruise at 40 - 45 MPH between 3000 and 3200 rpms.. If I kick it up to 4000 - 4200 I can go 50 - 60 mph.


Am I actually in 3rd? or am I in 2nd like I thought I was?

same problem in what I'm pretty sure is a '95 4l60e. Mine turned out to be the 3-4 clutch pack being bad.

I talk to a transmisson specialist and was told my sun shell housing was crack. I have the same problem with my S10 ZR2 4x4, except I have no reverse. I ordered the sun shell and will get it today. I rebuilt my valve body but didn't help. And change the fluid and filter. Still no help. Hope this info will help you.

It is indeed the dreaded 3rd/OD clutchpacks..

computer is calling for third gear and the solonoid is doing it's thing, but there's no 3rd gear due to the slipping burned up clutchpacks..

I'm selling the truck as is for $1495

Already have a couple people coming to look at it..the truck is very nice but it's an extra car for us so I'll let someone else deal with the transmission issue and decide whether to go the cheap junkyard route or spend the 2 grand needed for the whole rebuild.
