Angry Cam Position Sensor Malfunction

I'm new to the boards, but I hope someone can help me with this:

I've got my service engine soon light on... came on once, with the message "Cam Position Sensor Malfunction" but the truck was running fine, so I reset the light... truck ran all day, didn't come back on... the next morning I start it and 10 seconds later, it's back on.

It's been 11 degrees lately, and this is a childish question, but could that cause the sensor to malfunction? The truck is running fine, no hesitation, no odd noises. And I haven't done any work on it in a month or so. Just out of the blue started giving me this light.

I hope replacing the sensor is a cheap/easy job if that's what it comes too... anybody have any ideas?

edit: my name doens't show the model... 1998 gmc sierra 1500, 5.7 ltr

the temp outside shouldn't make any difference. however, i have had the similar problem with mine when i replaced the intake manifold gasket and had the cam sensor timing off. i had talked to a friend of mine at the dealership and he said that if it gets about 2 - 4 degrees off of time the service engine light will come on. if it gets to 6 degrees or more it will stay flashing service engine. to cure it you just need to have the cam sensor timing reset at the dealership unless anyone else knows how to do this without going there?

Any idea what would get the timing to change 2-4 degrees? Engine hasn't been touched in over a month so not sure why it would just start happening all of a sudden.
