2001 Cherokee tailgate wont open

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that the tailgate and rear glass window will not open. When I unlock the doors I do not hear the mechanisim click either. My wife is gonna kill me if I don't get this fixed by the holidays...please help!!!

Does it open manually with the handle or key? That would rule out any PHYSICAL problem (stuck or broken latch). Next, I'd recommend checking wires and cables for the latch (you'll probably have to pull off the interior plastic covers to expose the latch). Once it's opened, check wires for electrical current, and cables & latches for anything that's loose or disconnected.

There is no resistance when you try to open it. Also the fuse for the rear window and the locks is fine. There is a little plastic door on the insode of the back lid that i dont know what it is for. thks
