I have a 04 Z71, Im getting this knocking feeling and sound in the steering wheel as I drive. I only have 22k miles, its a feeling like there is slack or something in the steering or something. Does anybody else have this or know what it is? Thanks.

Re: knocking in steering wheel.......
I think theres a thread on here that covers this already. Not many replies, but answers your question I do think.

Re: knocking in steering wheel.......
Head it on down to your local dealer.
He should take care of it for you. Have him run the vin no for recalls and tsb's. Some of them had a steering shaft problem. MT

Re: knocking in steering wheel.......
Yes....I have an 03 sierra z71....was doin tha same thing... i took it to the dealer and he told me that it was a recall but gm hadn't sent any recall notices out...i think i only had 15,000 miles when this happened. The problem was what he called the intermediate steering shaft... He said he had many of these going bad on the 03's. It is the shaft between the shaft that comes from the steering wheel and the steering box. It causes a bumping or popping noise and feeling in the steering wheel while going around a curve or turn. They replaced mine nearly 30,000 miles ago and havn't had any trouble since. I assumed they fixed this in the 04's but my dad purchased a new sierra 2wd in 05 and it had the same problem after only 10,000 miles. So go to your dealer and they should fix it for you. Hope this helps you.

Do you think that this would still cover a 2000 Silverado? I probably wouldn't be in luck, but I thought I might try. Matt

Call the dealer and give them the VIN, if it is a recall he should tell you and fix it for you

Unless something has changed, this is a bulletin, not a recall. Warranty ends on this when your vehicle coverage ends. GM has had this issue across the board for many years. My friend at the dealer takes the intermediate shaft out and repacks it periodically. Last I knew, replacing the shaft is as temporary as repacking, as the design has not changed. My HD does it, my friends 1500 does it, they ALL do it. Our Bonneville had the shaft replaced, then had to be repacked twice after that in the 2 years that we had it. Olds Intrigues are really bad.
This is what bothers me most about GM. They have a giant issue on all of their models like this, and they keep the same design for many years to come, knowing that owners are having to pay for repeated repairs. Everytime I start a customer's GM truck cold and hear an exhaust tick, I know that the left rear exhaust manufold bolt has broken off in the head. I see it all the time. My '95 did it on the 5.7 and now my 6.0 has done it in the same location. Hmmmm. Bulletins on both vehicles for the same thing as well as the 4.8 and 5.3. Once again, you'd think they'd fix the problem instead of re-applying the bulletin for the next model... |

My friend completes the repair in no time. Takes him three times as long to complain about how his bad back can't get under the dashboard anymore and how the warranty pay is crap than it does to actually do the repair.

Re: knocking in steering wheel.......
How hard is it to get to the part under the steering wheel?
