What's a Mach 1 427 worth?

first Ford post....

Hey guys, I've never driven a ford before but I heard the sound of the 427, that did it for me. Also I think, The Mach 1 Cobrajet is the best looking car in the world. Just something about the shape and that front fascia. Okay enough fanmail, Could 10 grand buy a Cobrajet and if so what condition would it most likely be in? Thanks. If not the 427, what do you think of the recent mach 1?

*edit it's a 428? now i'm confused

No I haven't chosen a side in the F-body/Mustang war...yet. I'm impressionable

Re: What's a Mach 1 427 worth?

well a cobrajet should be a 428, so your right, but if it is a 427... BUY IT. the ford 427 is a seriously badass motor. it was only put in the 1968 mustang though, which happens to be my favorite year. however the 428 is also a very good engine. it was under rated when it was put in mustangs back in the day, it was probably getting close to the 400hp range.

i would think 10 grand would be able to buy a cobrajet in pretty good condition. but im not an expert on that aspect of things.

Just buy a 427SOHC. All you could ever want for an old school raw power badass muscle car. Good luck finding one though. Probably cost everybit of $10 grand, I havent looked into prices on them in years though so I'm not sure.

I think I might have confused you. I'm asking about an entire car, not just a crate engine. Actually I'm looking for a car that doesn't need an engine swap. Could I find a 1969-70 mach1 Cobra Jet for 10k and not have to restore it? Would it be worth it?

If I new how to put those faces on here laughing at you I would, but I'm doing good just to check e-mail. Sorry.
Seriously though, you will need alot of luck finding one that doesn't need alot of work for that. I can't quote you prices, it's been awhile. If you do find one it might be OK, and probably would run OK also, but you know how it is sometimes, if you spend a little more money you can save yourself alot of time, headaches, and of course more money. I know you could buy a 69-70 coupe/fastback for $10k easy with a 302 or 351 but you might be pushing it with the Cobrajet. Also, don't even think of touching a 69-70 BOSS 302/429 for $10k. GOOD LUCK!

I know everyone loves muscle cars but I really think they are just old cars in disguise, which means if you want them running you have to put a lot of work into them, to get them to today's standards or even their's way back when. Maybe I should wait until I'm a bit older and have a job so I can put 20 grand into fixing one up. I just love the Cobra Jet ever since I saw one at a car show.

I'd get a newer mustang, but the 4.6 hasn't caught my attention at all. I was playing a Cobra R in Gran Turismo and the engine whined the whole time. What was up with that? I'm going way off topic, uh, about the Cobra Jet. Realistically I have to postpone this dream. But truthfully I'm starting to like mustangs, thanks to the 428

Re: What's a Mach 1 427 worth?

I didn't see this year's Barrett-Jackson Auction, but no "real/good" Mustang/Boss/Shelby can be had for under 25. You're best bet would be to find a decent-to-junker body, then clone it. FIgure you spend $1200 on some beat-up Fastback. Drop a few (like 12) hundred on the interior-then find a junker 428 CJ and rebuild it. The tranny, in this case, would be the easy part. Most any C-4 / C-6 would work, and the 4sp would be even easier. (Figure around 1K - 1.7K for a decent tranny set-up.) Figure out some paint, and call it a "RARE FIND!" (like, "OMG can you believe they put the headliner from a '76 Torino in? Those guys think SO FAR ahead!! and the Instrument Cluster? That's the same one as in a 1986 Ranger!")

DOING MY MATH: 1 200 + 1 200 + 1 700 = 4 100. 10 000 - 4 100 = $5 900 to build a 428 CJ.)

To answer the "Would it be worth it?" question. A concours restoration would fetch around $50-$100K- realisticly.) BOSSes and CJ's are the epitome of Ford Value. Rare GMs can get over $125K in a heartbeat. So, the GM's hold more value-unless you count the sound.

Gran Turismo? Its a cool game but I wouldn't exactly count that as a test drive. (Not that you could buy that car anyway) There are lots of cars that the sound is way off in that game. By the way the Cobra R dosn't have a 4.6 anyway.

Re: What's a Mach 1 427 worth?

How far $10k will go depends on how much work you're willing/able to do yourself. As has already been mentioned, it's not going to fetch you a cherry 1969 Mach 1 with cobra jet, though it might get you a 69' fastback, a restorable motor and trans, and get you started on the body work, interior, and paint you plan to use. I've seen the air cleaner assembly for that motor go for over a grand in the right condition. Patience when shopping, and doing the labor yourself will go a long ways. I commend your taste, and wish you good luck in your project. Oh yeah, and the 2000 Cobra R from your game has a 5.4l DOHC designed for autocross type usage. It's loud, mean, and puts out 385HP naturally aspirated. The car has raw power you can't shake a stick at, and still more potention from modification and tuning that hasn't been realized.

Ok, not that I'm trying to complain, but there is no way that a real Cobra R Mustang has that pathetic whine that it does in GT 3 or 4. None of the cars in that game sounds anything close to what they do in real life. That is one thing I really don't like about the game. But, in the game's defense, they focused mainly on the physics/handling and appearance of the cars more than the sound. That being said, if you want to find an old Mustang for $10K in driveable shape, it probably won't be a Mach I. I see big block Mach I's (427,428,429) on eBay sell around $30K-$50K on a regular basis in restored condition. Drivable fixer-uppers are hard to find, as someone owns it and will probably restore it. Then you have the old and nasty for $1,000 to $5,000, depending on year, options, engine, etc. that will require extensive knowledge, repair, and of course money to restore to original or better-than-original condition. I commend you on your choice of car, as I love and adore my humble '68 Mustang coupe. I have a long road ahead of me as it needs complete restoration, but its a road I'm going to go down, as it is my first Mustang. Best wishes and keep those eyes open, because you never know what you'll run in to when you least expect it.

Re: What's a Mach 1 427 worth?

OT_ I commend the guys at Polyphony Digital on making a kick-a.. game, but they are NOT Ford guys, by any stretch.

On topic, don't forget that you're talking about 5000 examples of the CJ, Mach I and the BOSS. There are 6 Billion people in the world-and more than some of the Cars have been wrecked. It's simple market forces that drive the price of them way up.

Around here, we say: ALL Cars run on used parts...think about it.
