2005 Alero Ignition Tumblers or Key Is Bad... Need Information!!
i have a 2005 Alero and the ignition tumblers are bad. The key was snatched out before the switch was turned in the locked position. Re-inserted the key, started the vehicle, drove to the local store, turned the vehicle to the locked position and removed the key. Came out the store, reinserted the key and the lock wouldn't turn. Removed the ignition and seperated the lock housing from the electrical portion. The key wouldn't turn the lock cylinder. In my local salvage yard there is a 2002 & 2004 Alero, 2002, 2004 and 2005 Malibu and a 2004 & 2005 Acheiva. Will the ignition and key from one of these readily attach to my electrical portion? Basically will I be able to make one of those work and if so can anyone pass the knowledge so that I may be able to accomplish this task.

Simple question, is your Alero still under the bumper to bumper warranty? If it is then a GM dealer should honor the warranty and repair it to include providing the part.

I am helping someone on the back side of a slight domestic situation. I don't know about the warranty. I already have the switch out and the dash apart. Do you think that warranty will still cover this situation? I would like to know before I go asking them any questions. In the mean time if you or anyone can answer the previous post, I would love to now just for informations sake. It is nice to learn about something like this and just to hear other opinions. I am going to try to find out what I can about the warranty. Thanks.

With the switch already apart probably not. To answer your question, the Ignition Lock Cylinder is the same for the following through the years noted: 1999 - 2004 Alero 1997 - 2003 Malibu 1999 - 2004 Grand Am The GM part number is 12458191. 2004 is the last year the Alero was made. BTW - The cylinder is part of the Passlock security system. So a key relearn may be required.

No, she wasn't that lucky to have Oldsmobile make her the last. I lost my mother a few days before that thread and a lot of things that I did that week were not done with a clear mind. The vehicle is a 2002 and I am getting ready to put the switch in but I need to know something. On the shifter is that plastic assembly that the cable from the ignition switch is attached to. As we were trying to disconnect the cable, the connection on the plastic assembly broke. I was having a hard time getting it loose due to not being able to use the switch. Was it my fault that it broke or was that the only way that it was going to come loose? Is that assembly replaceable or will I need a new shifter ? Thank you and sorry for the error.

I have a 2001 Alero. The dealership said that the tumblers may stick and to spray a very small shot of WD40 into the ignition. Then put the key in and out really quick without turning it. Then try to turn it. I did and it turned for me.

Re: 2005 Alero Ignition Tumblers or Key Is Bad... Need Information!!
ohmeohmy77,
Please do not resurrect old posts. Meaning any thread where the last post is over 3 months old. Thread closed. BTW - Regardless of what you were told using WD40 on an ignition switch cylinder is bad practice as corrective action. POSTING IN CLOSED OR OUTDATED THREADS: If a thread has been closed, there is probably a logical reason for it. If you feel that the reason(s) for closure of the original thread are unjustified or wish further clarification feel free to contact any member of the moderating team. However, do not start a new thread about another closed thread. Please avoid posting or voting in outdated threads. It merely clutters up the message board and makes it more difficult for fellow members to sort through the vast amount of information contained on the boards. If you have new and important information to add regarding a past discussion, feel free to start a new thread and if need be, add a link to the original thread.
