Please describe the easiest way you have found to remove the temperature guage sending unit, from the vehicle? A 1994 2.3l ranger 5 speed manual.THANKS!

Wait until the vehicle is cold.
Remove the connector from the sending unit.
Unscrew the sending unit.
Put a small amount of pipe dope containing teflon around threads of new sensor.
Insert connector on sending unit.
Replace any lost coolant.

To check a suspected temperature sending unit, insert a 75 ohm resistor in place of sensor. Gauge should be at the "C" mark. Replace resistor with 10 ohm resistor. Gauge should be at the "H" mark. An easier method is to just use a pot and preset it with an ohm meter to each indicated value or just turn the pot between the indicated values and watch the temperature gauge move throughout its range.

I believe he is refering to a potentiometer. It is an adjustable variable resistor. You should be able to get one at radio shack. The reason why he would suggest getting one of those is so you can set the potentiometer at multiple resistance values and ensure that the gauge is reading the correst temp for the resistance values. Hower depending on how much the temp sending unit is ( sometimes they are only 7 bucks) You might just save yoursekf the trouble and throw a new one in there

I use that white thread tape instead of pipe dope, it just fills in the cracks between the threads so it doesnt leak, wrap it around 2 or 3 times, in a direction so when you screw it in it wont unravel the tape, hehe, always put in on the wrong way first, but thats my luck with everything.

The teflon tape is fine. In the above post with the pipe dope, all of the steps came from the factory manual. That's why it was mentioned!

hey guys, my dad just bought a fixer upper 93 ranger, 2.3L 4cyl automatic, and the guage doesnt work at all, was wondering where i can find the temp sender for the guage, i found one that when unplugged, throws a check engine light, so i assume thats the one for the ecm. That one was located on a coolant line up near the front right of the engine compartment while your sitting in the drivers seat. Just cant seem to find the temp guage sender to do my checking. Thanks.

nevermind, found it, thanks anyways guys. Replaced and works fine now!!!
