I always wondered....

Why so many people seem to think that a stealth/3kgt (non-turbo) can beat a 96-98 gt stock for stock. I have a fried who had a 93 stealth and he would always say that he would either be within 1 car length of me or beat me if we raced. I didn't think much of it driving a car with more power and torque (a 98 gt) but we finally did end up racing randomly one day from about a 40mph roll, and i pulled him like it was nothing. Is there something special about these cars that I dont know about?

And no, I'm not here to brag about my car being faster or blah blah blah, but are these things really supposed to beat v-8 mustangs stock for stock?

Re: I always wondered....

thats because you raced an SOHC, a more rare form of a non-turbo 3/S found in the stealth base models and 97-99 3000GT base models. They only came out of the factory with approximately 160 hp because of lower compression pistons and crappy single overhead cam heads. Find yourself a DOHC car to run and you wont walk away from it like that.

Re: I always wondered....

Um, we think DOHC cars can beat/be even with a 94-97 GT, not 98+

98s are the same as 97s, the mustangs changed in 99.

yea vr-4s are nothing to mess around with, though my civic before i totaled it would walk all over those if they were stock or close to it. As for the other stealths the RT is the DOHC one isnt? and theres also the RT/TT which is the vr-4 equivilant correct?

Doubtful if you were talking about a vr4, N/A I could picture if you had a lot of money in it.

it was a 93 hatchback b18 vtec with a t3/t04 turbo with some other less moders and a 50 shot....
so about 300 hp in a car weighing less than a ton....

Re: I always wondered....

Yea modded civic hatch's are no joke...well in the speed category at least...

But yeah, i've raced a '98 GT in my DOHC '94 SL we stayed about even 'till we hit traffic...got up to about 80 mph from a dig.

I had the choice between a modded 94-98 GT (don't remember the year) and the 3kgt at the dealership, drove both and was unimpressed by the GT, for a post-80's V8 that thing is slow.

No...3000GT's didn't have a SOHC 'till '97. Bases just came w/o options.
