do i need to use sealant on the valve cover gasket?

i replaced my valve cover gasket with a new set from napa and it's been leaking oil around that area now.. not a lot but a little oil wetness around the area. was i supposed to use sealant with the gasket? when i took it off the first time, it seemed like there was sealant along with it.

also, how hard do i screw the 4 screws down? like how much pound torque?

the ft lbs is only like 6 or something like that. they say to put a small dab you know where the hump is for the cam. they say to put a small dab as the base of the hump on both sides

You do not use rtv on rubber gaskets. Sounds like you dont have it tight enough.

yeah dont use any liquid sealant shit. i dont have any on mine and it is fine. you said there looks like there was some sealant from before? if so make sure you clean alll that off real good otherwise you wont have a tight seal. me i go way more than 6 ft lbs. but if you do dont over tighten and strip out the bolt or stud

the valve cover has never been off.. this was the first time off.. and it seems like honda used sealant.. i removed it with a razor blade it both sides were smooth. i tightened it pretty tight.

You got it. You only put rtv, or honda bond, whatever, in the weak spots, like the corners where the cam hump is.

yeah I got my car in for a tune up and there's this grey sealant looking stuff along with the black valve gasket. I can see it only in some parts (ie. near the dist)

such as permatex gray.

with permatex gray, you get twice as much for $4, compared to honda bond which is $15.
