91 TSI AWD, died and wont come back, HELP

Hey guys.... sorry I dont mean to be whoring these threads all the time, but I need some more help. Mikes 91 TSI AWD almost got to school today and it died. He had to stop for a red light right out side of school and he noticed it was idling around 500 rpm, then it just quit. We tried to start it, the starter just keeps going, but nothing happens. Heres what I was thinking: plugs, plug wires, or fuel pump. We just replaced the plugs, so I'm not too worried about those and the wires seem kinda new. Could it bee the fuel pump? He says the gas guage had been working, just to be sure its not out of gas we are going to get like a gallon of gas tomorrow and put it in and see what happens. I dont know shit about the ignition system, these cars have coil packs right? Could that have gone bad like that? What else? We are getting our Christmas bonuses on Thursday along with our normal checks and he might get the Presidents Award, 12% of his year to date , or just the normal 2% but thats still a nice chunk of money, so either way we will have some money to work with. Right now, we are just going to start buying shit and replacing stuff until it works. Let me know what you think. Thanks guys.

Post Whore!

You can rule out the spark plugs pretty much. Because even one was bad it would just make the car run like shit. Same with the wires.

I would look at the coil pack and the fuel pump. I can't see it being the injectors seeing that it happened during driving and all four would have to fail at the same time.

Seeing as how it was running and then crapped.

You can be pretty sure it's not the alternator or battery by the fact that the starter is actually cranking.

Thanks for the advice man, thats what I was thinking too. Will we need some type of fuel control to run walbro 255?

God dammit. Ok, well, looks like the beast is getting parked for a while. So will a MSD DIS-2 ignition box replace the coil pack, or are they two separate things? Yeah, it will definately get DSM link, but damn, that car took an expensive shit!

Well don't get me wrong you can run the 255 with just the afpr but it might run a little rich. But should be fine really.

No It doesn't replace the coil pack more that it lets you fully customize your ignition settings. You can actually by an MSD's coil pack to go along with the ignition box.

AFPR? If we get any data logging/ tuning it will be DSMlink. Why screw aroung with something we would be replacing anyway? And doesnt DSMlink allow you to do the same thing as the MSD DIS-2?

Re: 91 TSI AWD, died and wont come back, HELP

here is a thread that might answer your fuel pump questions

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...highlight=afpr

And I honestly don't know if DSM link lets you do that or not because I don't have it. But I would assume it would let you control the ignition. But the MSD isn't expensive anyway.

Re: 91 TSI AWD, died and wont come back, HELP

Ahhhhh, I see. Wow, I learned more tonight from you than I did today in school! Well, I need to sleep a little so Mike and I will talk it over tomorrow and start buying shit. First off, we are going to put some gas in it to make sure it didnt get syphoned or he didnt just run out, then comes the new parts. I think we'll try the coil pack first, SBR said that its generally lasts abou 100,000 miles and shits out, well Mikes car has 104k miles. Then the AFPR and fuel pump if it still doesnt work. Thanks again defiancy.

Re: 91 TSI AWD, died and wont come back, HELP

Ok, so today Mike tried to start the car again. It started, but it was sputtering like a mofo. Frozen gas line? It is pretty cold up here. What can we put in the tank to un freeze the line?
