Stealth SOHC 5 spd vs 3000gt auto

There is a guy at my school with a 1992 (appx) stealth SOHC with a 5 speed. I have a DOHC 1991 3000gt with only 36k on the motor, who would take the win?

Is your 3000GT a VR4? Either way, it's SOHC vs DOHC. I give the win to you due to ammount of cams.

Re: Stealth SOHC 5 spd vs 3000gt auto

who's got the mods? and what mods?
I got a SOHC, when my transmission works right... I take most DOHCs (stock)... I don't think there's one here other than the VR4's that will take me... (most only have an intake)...

His car is stock all the way through and mine has a K&N air filter, each are mostly stock.

Re: Stealth SOHC 5 spd vs 3000gt auto

that DOHC gives u ~60hp more... even with a less efficient transmission... you should have him... especially if u guys are both stock... he may pull a little off the line... b/c he's hauling around less weight... but only ~200lbs less... if either one of you has a heavy ass system in the car, drop it out first... (I used to do it all the time... quick connect terminals... and shit... I'd have my buddy with an Aveo 5-door (wagon) follow me to the races... I'd be in 2nd race... that'd give me enough time to slip the box outta the back of my car into his... and whip some ass... any extra weight like that will slow u down...

but DOHC definitely has more oomph if u r both stock (for that matter if each of u had the same mods, the DOHC would still benefit more than the SOHC)... the intake on the DOHC allows it to breathe easier... and the extra camshaft gives that extra NA oomph... so I think u got him... not even counting any gain from the K&N

he would probably get you off the line because our autos naturally aspirated are a little sluggish off the line, however, if he can't launch, that factor falls out of place. After ya'll get going, you should be able to walk him. We had a race like that 2 years ago here in town. The SOHC got off the line, and the auto caught him and was passing him by around 1/8th a mile. Go from a highway roll . . . your gearing will be far superior to his (short gears at high speeds plus only a 6K redline vs your 7K), plus the better heads and higher compression ratio will give you a huge advantage.

I'd bet there are alot more than just VR4's here that could take you. That intake doesnt add nothing for hp. It just looks pretty. If your car is so fast what times does it pull in the quarter? I bet with compression down on 4 cylinders I could still beat you in a race. And there are plenty of DOHC NA's on here faster than me too.

As for the SOHC MTX v DOHC ATX, I havent actually ran any in a 1/4 mile race but have witnessed several DOHC NA ATX runs. My stock time is faster than most of there modded times. A roll race the DOHC ATX gets the advantage because its already out of its sluggish first gear. So it depends on how the race goes down and if the SOHC driver can shift on who would win.

VR4s never came in autos...

other than that I think you should be able to take him... I'm not exactly sure on how you would go about launching an auto properly (hold down the brakes and rev????) but if you take him from a roll, I say that that's all you mang...

I wasn't saying that was the only mod I have... I was talking a/b his mods (thread starter)... As far as my mods go... I have Custom 2.5 dual exhaust, Cold air intake, a lightweight flywheel, and Exedy clutch... I know there's a lot that can take me.... but from a dead-stop... I've got a stock DOHC... wait til after the holidays... I'll have my car in and outta the shop... that tranny will be fixed... I'll run it to the strip... see what numbers I can pull and post back... I'll also be doing a single turbo off the front manifold... I'll have to get back to u on when I partake this mod... b/c it'll be interesting...

You are contradicting yourself. You said...

So do you have SOHC or DOHC?

And from a dead stop.... I have cut 2.2 and a few 2.19 60's on street tires. I can launch it like a mo fo. And I shift like no ones business.

As for your mods, the intake adds maybe a max of 1 hp, the catback a max of 5hp, the flywheel doesnt really add any hp, and of course neither does the clutch.

Heres my mods taken from my sig on 3si
ACT Maxx Xtreme clutch-4.5" open element filter-removed resonator-DOHC TB-gutted precats-3sx DP-2.5" test pipe-TT catback-removed EGR-IPO 8.5mm MSD Superconductors-NGK plugs-3kgtmotorsports STS-solid shift bushings

I plan on a few more mods but am staying away from turboing it. That was my initial plans but all the fab work needed made me shy away. When I want boost I'll buy me a VR4.

It won't make any more hp at the crank, but if its a lightweight flywheel it will reduce rotational mass and reduce hp loss to the wheels. The same way AWD and RWD cars loose more hp from the crank to the wheels. Still not a big gain in horsepower.

I no its better to do the TT conversion, BUT WHY!!! when everyones doing it, u no? some said one manifold was bad, but some said it was alright, some suggested i do it at the down pipe where they meet, lol, that'll be interesting wont it. well good luck.

Ok, I'm not contradicting myself... What I was meaning is that locally, there's no DOHC's that I've messed with that I couldn't take... the only mod that anyone I've seen here locally has, is a cold air intake...

Well, as far as the flywheel is concerned... dropping almost 20-30 lbs of rotating mass... that does make the car a lot quicker... to my understanding... it does add hp, or at least frees it up and makes it available alot quicker...

and when my car's together... I can shift it like no other... but for now, I'll be taking it easy...
