Carbon Driveshaft
I ordered a carbon driveshaft because I am still having high-speed vibration problems even with an aluminum driveshaft on my 95 formula. It's not here yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has one and if you noticed any performance differences. I hear that they deliver more rear wheel hp, but I also heard that you lose some driveline torque because it's lighter. Comments?

Re: Carbon Driveshaft
you sure your drive shaft was balanced? the drive shaft shouldnt just cause vibrations like that. No advice to you on the drive shaft. Also, is the vibration limited to a set speed range?

The aluminum shaft was a new GM part that has balancing weights on it. The vibration happens at 85+ mph, i guess thats the "critical speed" of the shaft in my car. I've seen technical bulletins on the problem, in that the transmission output shaft and the differential must be within 1 degree of each other to avoid vibration problems. If the carbon shaft doesn't solve the problem, I'll have to have the output shaft, universal joints, and driveshaft balanced as an assembly. I'm fairly confident that it will fix the problem though. For $700, it better.

you can get them through Year One. I was looking into one, but im skeptic it will handle the HP when i finally put my 396 stroker in.

I ordered it from Thunder Racing in Louisiana, they were having some kind of anniversary sale. With shipping, it was $768.00
As I remember, the steel shafts are 12 pounds, the aluminum ones are 8 or 9, and the carbon ones are about 6 pounds. As for strength, I've heard some carbon shafts are rated to 800 hp or so. They must be able to handle power, because they are using them on diesel trucks to cut down on vibration. I have another used one I bought to fit my 95 formula, but it's a little too long for 3rd or 4th gens and must have been meant for earlier cars or a drag setup. I'm going to sell it. If anyone wants it let me know, it's in great shape. Otherwise I'm going to ask about $200 + shipping on e-bay for it. |
