Do you mean one of the axle shafts broke in two? Or did the axle housing break?
What was he doing?
Its probably a D35 axle and is fairly common with big tires and off road. i dont know who quoted you 2K for that but I promise, if its a D35, that whole rear axle isnt worth half that. go to ebay or the local junk yard, and find one with the right gears for $300 and install it. If youve got a nice socket set and wrenches, jack and jcakstands, its about an hour of work.
Thats the worst case scenario where you would actually have to install a whole new axle. His problem is probably a broken axle shaft. Take the cover off the diff and remove the pieces of broken shaft using a mechanics magnet, look at the ring and pinion for any damage. If there isnt any, replace the axle seal at the end of the axle tube, go to the junk yard and get an axle shaft (got to be the correct side), and slide it in. Again, about an hour, basic tools and maybe $100 for the shaft.

if its a D44 axle, its going to be much more to replace and a little more to install a new axle shaft. I doubt thats the case though because a broke D44 shaft wont completely exit the axle tube as you describe.

Post back on here exactly what has happened and I can walk you though the repair if your up for it. Please dont pay anyone $2000 if you are even the slightest bit mechanically inclined and have someplace to work on it.
