intermitant fuel pump

when i turn the key on ,sometimes i hear the fuel pump and other times i dont. when idont hear it obviously it wont start the truck. i dont want to replace the fuel pump until i know thats the problem for sure.
its a 1996 1500 with a 5.7 4x4.
please help.
need suggestions.

need suggestions.
swap out the relay with another one in the box if that does not help find the pump prime wire jumper b+ to it. if you can't find it jump the relay terminal to run the pump. an elec. shecm. will probably come in handy. a book or an alldata subscription is a lot cheaper than the pump.

i put new relay in and so far that seemed to do the trick. thank you for the advice
