harmonic balancer

Alright I am changing my timing belt. I haven't got the balancer off yet due to the lack of the tool needed and rain. After I manager somehow to loosen the bolt on it I know normally you need a puller to get the balancer off. I looked at a manual just to make sure I wasn't missing anything and it didn't say anything about using a balance puller. Must I use one or will it come off without?

I just had mine off. Put a long screwdriver under one side and pried a little and then put it under the other side and pride a little and it popped right off.

Re: harmonic balancer

Thanks. Just being cautious. Any suggestions on how to break the bolt loose? I'm guessing I either need a chain or strap wrench or I could lodge something against it if I had to.

I just got in there with a ratchet, extension and socket and broke it loose. If the whole pulley tries to turn then put in in gear (manual trans) or PARK (auto trans). That should prevent the pulley from turning. Ifthe pulley is stubborn then tap it lightly with a hammer while prying on it. It's easiest for me to take out the plastic wheelwell. Then you can see what's going on and have a lot more room for your hands.

Something I learned was the engine won't run with that pulley removed. (I tried to start it up to see if I had done it all correctly). The pulley needs to be in place for the cam position sensor to pick it up. When you pull it off make sure you don't lose the little 'key' that will be on the shaft.
