no upshift

I have a 97 cavalier 2.2 auto with overdrive. Trans goes into reverse and drive just fine but when driving forward it seems to only have 2nd gear. No shift at all and is reving quite high at 40-45 mph. I have a check engine light on and etc light also. Could this be causing the problem? Just bought the car with a bad engine, put in a new crank and found this on test drive. Am I just hopeful it's a computer problem or could the bad trans have caused the bad engine? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I have found the problem with the shifting. The round plug was pushed into the trans so the pigtail connector was not actually pluged in. I got all connected tightly and it shifts fine now. I still have the ets light problem but it is now driveable.
