Replacing a fuel pump

I have a `98 Buick Regal GS (3800 Supercharged).I think the Fuel Pump went out. Is there anything special that I should be aware of besides dropping the tank and replacing the pump?

Look under the carpet in the trunk. There should be an access panel that will allow you to remove the pump without dropping the tank. Simply remove the panel, unhook the fuel lines (you will need a tool) and remove the locking ring. I suggest that you remove it using non-sparking tools. Make sure you get all the connections back together.

There are a couple other items you may want to try. If the fuel pump resistor has gone out you can bend you can try bending tab 86 on relay #15. If the resistor is bad you can run the car until you can replace it. Much cheaper than a new pump.

Lynn (GTPDad), just to clarify the Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix fuse box layouts are different, therefore Relay #15 is not the fuel pump speed control relay on a Regal. It is the A/C Clutch relay. On '98 Regal GS, the fuel pump relay is Relay #19 and the fuel pump speed control relay (L67 only) is Relay #18.

If the fuel pump resistor is suspected on a L67 Regal the same procedure can be applied, however, not following the Grand Prix main fuse box layout as pointed out above but Regal's only.

Dan, your Regal GS is L67 equipped. Meaning it has the Eaton M90 Gen3 supercharger and not the normally aspirated Series II 3800 engine. All L67 equipped GM cars have the two speed hi flow fuel pump and the fuel pump resistor mentioned by GTPDad (Lynn) and the fuel pump speed control relay.

This is not applicable to a L36 equipped Regal such as an LS model. The fuel pump speed control relay and fuel pump resistor is not installed on an LS.

I have a '01 Regal GS, '99 Regal LS and '97.5 Grand Prix GTP and have experienced the differences first hand.

No problem Lynn. Your suggestion was good as usual. The differences in the GM "W" body cars wiring, etc. is mind boggling and makes you wonder why there was no standardization of more other than the engine and tranny platforms. No wonder GM is going down the toilet. If my Grand Prix service manual was good for the Regal I would not need additional service manuals for my Regals but sadly it is not the case.
