1989 Suburban - restore it or dump it?
Possibly a retorical question; I have a 1989 GMC K1500 that after 17 years and 140K, it is showing it's age. At no surprise, rust is creeping to all four corners as well as some framework and rockers. Mechanically good as well as interior. A long list of pending repairs from bushings to brakes, all fluid lines, rust and paint and weather stripping. At $50K to replace my all weather hauler or pump $6K into it? I put on about 8,000 miles per year. Any thoughts?

Hey Loekee 75, Thanks for the feedback. I have been "looking up" new/used replacements and still leaning to the keep and fix as you too suggested. Unless something lands in my lap, the rejuvenation should begin soon.

Re: 1989 Suburban - restore it or dump it?
I faced the same situation earlier this year with my '90 half-ton tailgate model. I bought it new in April 1990 and had 370.000 original miles.
The new alternatives were $30-$40,000 and only got a couple of mpg more. What I really wanted was a full-size SUV for my business travel with a hybrid powertrain that would deliver perhaps 30 in town and 25 on the highway. But this is several years off, perhaps 2009. So I got a first-class paint job (no rust in California) and had a 383 stroker motor built for torque and mileage, total investment under $10,000. I figure I'm set for 10 years at 30,000 miles per year. If I do pick up a hybrid in a few years, I'll keep this old one for towing! |
