Another Computer Problem...

Well, I'm pretty sure I just fried my new HD. I had a power outage at my house and wouldnt start back up and I tried the same thing as last time...no dice. I unhooked the HD from my computer for BIOS not to detect it. Then I powered down and detached all the cables from the back. When I tried to re-attach the HD, the power cable sparked and the HD shocked the hell out of me. I think I was a victim to static... It wouldnt detect the HD after this happened so i guess its fried now. The wierd thing is, I attached my old HD and It ran like nothing ever happened to it. I guess I'll buy another HD and a new MoBo at the same time from Newegg. My luck is just wonderful....

Edit:I'm looking at these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148022
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813185061
I'll need a computer guru to tell me if they are compatable or not.

Re: Another Computer Problem...

well the two are compatible.

if i were you, i would get something that supports SATA, the motherboard does, but the drive is PATA (older) If you go with SATA, the drive will be more compatible with future systems.

anyway, suck about that, i just had a drive burn up on me at work, like it sparked into flames

Re: Another Computer Problem...

I've used PCChips stuff, it's OK. Not high quality, but it gets the job done. I haven't had any trouble with their mobos.

Seagate makes decent hard drives, no worse than anyone else's. Best part is, most of them come with 5 yr warranties now.

Re: Another Computer Problem...

What would be a better Mobo and HD combination that wouldnt break the bank? I may can stretch it to like $170. Any more than that and its bye bye Squier Strat...

Re: Another Computer Problem...

I don't think there's anything wrong with your choices. I'm not a fan of spending lots of money on computer gear, if the less expensive stuff will do what you need it to.

I like newegg's prices and service, I think you'll do just fine buying lower priced stuff from them.

The SATA hard drives and mobos are nice, but I haven't needed that kind of speed, so I haven't bothered.

I usually buy "trailing edge" technology. It's still an upgrade for me, but the prices are more reasonable. It just all depends upon what you need the computer for. I don't game with my stuff, so I don't need the biggest and fastest.

Re: Another Computer Problem...

I do play games that require a reletively fast computer. Like, Sims2, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and Dues Ex. Would these be better for performance?

Re: Another Computer Problem...

yeah, that would be better.

msi makes pretty good boards, the only one i didnt like was the one they made for emachine/gateway with the ati200 chipset, (had a lot of problems)

the chipset on that board will be ok for running those games,

pcchips are ok, but if you must go with ECS, they are pcchips parent company and i have a board from them, its worked prefectly, but my pcchips has no usb

Re: Another Computer Problem...

I am not familiar with chipsets and whatnot. If some one would suggest a mobo that is compatable with that HD that has a beter chipset i'd be greatful. If the cost could be kept to $90 or cheaper for the Mobo that'd be great.

Re: Another Computer Problem...

Okay, tomorrow im ordering these...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144026
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148105
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130519
On the case, only 44/887 reviews had a rating of 3/5 or below, so i guess the quality is there. Can't beat newegg's prices!

Re: Another Computer Problem...

good selection, i have that same hdd, and aspire makes a pretty good case.

ive not really noticed the ncq technology improvement, but its a solid drive, its been partioned way more than i can count, its had a ton of filesystems on it and been re-formatted a ton. Ive been using it as an external drive to create test and server images on.
