Re: Wont Start
You may have to both charge-up the battery AND jump it 'til you get things rolling.
I would also suggest removing all the plugs and spinning the engine several times, before starting, just to loosen/lube everything up a bit. A bit of WD40 sprayed into each cylinder ... before the spinning... is recommended also. |

Re: Wont Start
The clicking noise is probably the starter relay,on the right inner fender. If you jump between the battery side and the small terminal it might turn over/start.

Re: Wont Start
The battery positive cable is connected to the starter relay and the starter is connected to the other heavy cable. The small terminal is connected to the start switch(key).Often the relay goes bad, or has corrosion at the terminals causing the clicking. If you " short " between the battery and start(small) terminals it may engage the starter motor. If this fails, you can try hooking a jumper cable set,one to each side of the relay, standing back away from the battery ,momentarily touching the cables together. If the starter engages, you have a fault in in the relay or battery positive cable/connection.If not, problem is starter related. This is assuming the battery is good.

Re: Re: Wont Start
My guess is a bad battery. For one, it's been sitting for a long time. The cold isn't helping either. I had to replace my battery as soon as it starting getting cold. It was an old battery though.
Your truck will make that noise if it doesn't have enough juice to power the starter to turn the flywheel. I would attempt to charge the battery first before looking into replacing the starter relay. Though, the procedure mentioned will work fine for testing the relay. If you charge the battery, and it works, I would still reccommend replacing it. Chances are is that it's going to slowly go dead, and you will need to keep recharging it. The relay is just a switch. To turn it on, it gets a low current +12volts to turn on a greater current +12volts. The reason they did that is to avoid having to use heavy gauge wire to the ignition switch. The switches would also need to be hulked out to handle the heavy current. Electronic fan relays are used for this same principal. He was explaining that you need to locate the starter relay, and jump the two prongs. They're basically threaded studs. BECAREFUL NOT TO HIT ANYTHING METAL ON THE TRUCK OR YOU WILL CREATE A DIRECT SHORT. Pete |

If the engine is cranking over, but not starting, you're missing either fuel or spark. Try to spray some starting fluid into the upper intake plenum and cranking it over. If it starts, you're engine is not getting any fuel. If not, you're probably not getting any spark. Test the spark to verify it's not there. Do you hear the fuel pumps come on twice for about 1 second each time? In either case, you should run the codes. If you do not get anything from the computer, the computer is probably not getting powered. Very rarely do the computers go out in the Rangers. Pete |
