Quad 4 to a 2.2 Engine Change

What all is involved in changing from a Quad 4 to a 2.2 engine and trans? I would like to know if the wiring harness is the same at the firewall for both so if I had the harness for the 2.2 it would plug in to the existing harness at the firewall and I am sure I would have to switch out the PCM as well...also are all mounts in the correct positions, axles the same??? any info would be appreciated, Thanks

Swapping a Quad4 for a Twim Cam or another Quad4 would be much easier, require less modification, and net you better power.

The problem is now that I have a 1995 Z-24 which is the 2.3 Quad-4 and the tranny needs some work....the only tranny that bolts up is one off a 1995 Sunfire with a 2.3 Quad-4 or another 1995 2.3 Cavalier Quad-4 ...that motor must have a diff. bellhousing bolt pattern than the later 2.4 Quad-4's apparently....narrows down the availability of used tranny's and I find some used Z-24's with bad motors and was just wondering about the change-over differences to go with a 2.2 motor and tranny.....Fred

You're looking in the wrong direction, find an older 2.3 Quad 4 and tranny...check out Olds and other GM's.

I'm not changing out the motor and tranny on the 95 Z24 that I'm working on now, the motor runs great .....has some oil leaks on the cam housings so I pulled the motor and tranny and I'm going thru the tranny and replacing the leaking cam housing gaskets.....just easier to do with the motor and trans pulled.....I look for hurt Cavaliers and repair them for resale.....just easier to find 2.2 engines and tranny's cheap to replace a 2.4...in a Z24. I haven't tried to go from a 2.4 to a 2.2 yet just wondering what all would be compatible between the two.....probably would have to change the wiring harness from the firewall out along with the PCM for the 2.2 don't know if the axles are the same?....and if 2.2 and 2.4 tranny's are the same....any idea?....info?....Thanks, Fred

OverAllComa...My 95 is a red one like your 97....sharp car....I also have black 95 coupe with a 2.2 that my daughter drives and a yellow 2004 LS Sport that I drive that I lowered 1.75" frt. and 2" rear added a stainless muffler to fit the cut-out in the rear facia better than the stock one did and also put some 17' aftermarket wheels and tires on it....next intake and so on....warranty is just about done.....Fred

Re: Quad 4 to a 2.2 Engine Change

I'm not going to pretend like I know the situation with the wiring, but I can guarantee you all the control modules need to be replaced. As far as the rotating stuff, easy way to check: go to a parts store and ask for the part number on a 95 Z24's axles, etc. Then ask for the #'s on a base model's stuff. They match up, you're golden.

No one ever said you had to BUY them from the place, but they're nice for checking compatibility on things.

Also, don't quote me on this, but if memory serves th 94+ 2.2OHV was OBDII while the 95 2.3 Quad4 was OBDI, with the OBDII change occuring in 96 on the Twin Cams.
