81 truck 4x4 electrical problems help!
HELP my 81 toyota truck 4x4 unfortunetly has a series of electrical problems
1. alternator somtimes doesn't charge the battery andi can watch the voltage getting lower and lower when the truck is running 2. when the alternator decides it wants to charge the battery that battery usually stays around 12.5 volts. I have only once gotten the truck to run at above 14 volts. 3. ocasionally the everything on the dash will stop working. rpm gage goes haywire lights will stop working the seatbelt light will keep turning on and off and this bell will start working. i asume its to do with the seatbelt light but the bell doesnt work when the dash is working normally. 4.every now and again the headlight and the taillights will start flashing like thier overloading. all of these problems seem to randomly fix themselves when i go to fix them. thanks. |

Re: 81 truck 4x4 electrical problems help!
Check both ends of your battery cables, make sure they are clean and secure. Start checking other connections to make sure they are secure and are not corroded. Make an enlarged copy of the wiring diagram for your truck. Mark off the connections you have cleaned and checked.

If the brake and charge lights come on during revving of the engine then it's a sign that the carbon alternator brushes require replacing as this is the mileage for them to wear out. In alternators the brushes wear out on average every 140-170 000 miles where on the dashboard the brake & charge light both come on at the same time. About half of the auto electric shops in your local yellow pages sell carbon alternator brushes and copper solenoid starter contacts for about $5/pair.Another way to verify that the alternator is not charging is while the engine is running bring a metal screwdriver or any metal object near the alternator and if the alternator is working properly then it should act like a magnet and grab the screwdriver.
