timing chain marks

I have a 1992 Lumina with a 3.1. The timing chain broke.
My Chiltons says the cam mark goes down toward the crank like the old small block did. My Haynes says that with a 3 bolt camgear the mark goes up! So what's right??
I used to change one in a small block in 30 minutes, now it takes longer than that to get to it.

Keep in mind that with "the old small block"--Chevy small block--the dot on the cam gear went to 6:00, the mark on the crank gear went to 12:00 at top dead center, compression, of NUMBER 6 NOT NUMBER 1.

So both sets of directions "could" be correct, because they aren't telling you which cylinder needs to be at TDC Compression (as opposed to TDC Exhaust)
