1999 Grand Am Heater
Hello all - I have a problem with my 1999 Grand Am heater - it has worked intermittently for the last little while - sometimes it comes on, sometimes it doesn't come on, and sometimes it only comes on after driving a while. I also have the common problem of it only working in positions 3 and up. I know this is the resistor - is the other problem also the resistor?
Thanks, Mark. |

Re: 1999 Grand Am Heater
When you say it comes on, do you mean the blower comes on, or do you mean it's blowing just cold air. If it's the blower going in and out, it's probably the resistor and/or the blower motor. If the heat is coming or going, I'd look for blockages to the heater core. Have you had the system flushed recently?

Re: 1999 Grand Am Heater
Btw-not only being pluged, if an air pocket is down in the heater core, its hard for the anti-freeze to force the air out. You'll need to try and bleed the air out, from the bleeder valve, its above the water pump, brass, cant miss it. just my

Heater Blower
I replaced the resistor and the blower is still tempermental - I WD-40'd the shaft and it works more often - comes on about 75% of the time. I left the kick-plate off just in case I needed to do more work, and now when the blower doesn't come on if I reach under and tap the motor housing it comes on. Once it comes on everything is fine - good heat and motor runs well.

Re: 1999 Grand Am Heater
The bushings in the blower motor are shot, you need a new motor. Do it soon or the bad motor will toast your new resistor.

Re: 1999 Grand Am Heater
i find it hard to beleive the bushings are shot. But I guess nothings impossible. But I would say that is the case, since it works when you bumpstart the blow motor.
Welcome smoke44 ! its under the dash panel(down on the floor) on the passanger side, that'll need to be removed. Should be a big black box under there too, thats the Body Control Modul(BCM). But first check the fuse and relays, if you havnt already. Two plug-ins on the blower, one is power and the biger plug, has 4-5 wires, is the resistors connection. Remover the three screws holding the blower motor in and the resistors inside there. They cost about $25, depending on where you live. Good Luck, and Happy Holidays Everyone!
