Hi,
My name is Sam. I am new to this fourm and was hoping for advise from more experiened members. I was driving along the A12 when I drove over a small pot hole(i think) the and the speedo just droped and now makes a ticking noise when I speed up but the speedo wil not work. The rev count etc are all okay. Can anyone help, does anyone know what may be causing this and how to fix it? Sam |

Mine speedo cable fell out of the back of the speedometer once. I think I pulled the instrument cluster to get it plugged back in but a good, skinny contortionist can slide the seat back, stand on his head and maybe get it back in the hole if he can see up in there good enough with a flash light. I'm guessing this because it occured when you hit a bump. There is a plastic retaining clip that should 'click' when it is fully seated. The reason mine fell off is probably because I didn't 'click' that retainer all the way in. In other words, it was my fault. If it's not this then it could be a broken speedo cable.

If you can get your head down by the brake pedal and look up in there with a flashlight you can see the cable. If you give it a slight tug and it falls off then that was the problem. Should be snapped on and you can't pull it off if it is. If it is loose you might be able to get it back on. Slide the seat all the way back and try it. If this doesn't work then I'll help you get the instrument panel off. Best to confirm that this is actually the problem first before doing anything else. Tugging the cable a little under the dash will let you know if it's hooked up. Still could be a broken cable.

Re: Speedo not working (1993 Escort LXD)
I have bben late for the past week since this happened and I have not time to have a look at the problem.
Once I get a moment I will have a look. It looks like I may have time next week, so will keep you posted. Thanks again. Quote:

Re: Speedo not working (1993 Escort LXD)
Just went out and looked. The speedo cable is directly above the steering column. It's black and fairly thick because it looks like it is wrapped in padding....

I had an 88 exp years ago and the speedo cable broke loose from the transmission too... chase the speedo cable thru the firewall to the transmission. You may have lost a speedo gear too, it's driven inside the transmission.

Its the clock!!!
Hi there,
Hope you all had a great christmas and Happy New Year. I managed to find out the problem. It not that the speedo cable fell out, its's that the cogs in the clock have fallen out. I need to buy a new clock. I guess I could try and have a go at putting it back together again, but I really don't have the time to mess about with it. Thanks for all your advise guys, much appriciated. One more thing...I live in the London, UK. Is ther anyone hear who may be able to help me locate a Ford Braker so I can by a used clock in East London? Sam |
